I need help...When I put my boat in reverse, all it does is slip.Clanking like its slipping gears.What is the problem? What can I do to fix this?Thanks for any help.

If.... the shift cable and linkage are all in good shape and secure:

The shift rod needs to be adjusted.
It runs from the powerhead, down into the lower unit.

You can access it on the starboard side of the motor, just to the left of the tilt and trim pump.
There is a coupler nut and a locking jam nut on the shift rod.
You need to loosen the small jam nut, then turn the coupling nut a turn or two, secure with the jam nut. Then test it out.

You need to find the midway point between forward and reverse. Then it should shift into both forward and reverse.

If you can not get it adjusted, you may have a worn clutch dog in the lower unit.
