I'm found a 9.9 hp Johnson that I'd like to buy for my son's row boat for his birthday. It would go on a 12 ft aluminum Seaking. The motor is a long shaft. What are the differences in powering the boat with a long shaft vs a short shaft :confused:besides the obvious of hitting bottom in lower water? Would it plane out faster? Cavitation?

Re: Long shaft vs short shaft

you would need to put a transom elevator on the transon if you have a short shaft transom. to get top performance, the reason too much foot in the water. here is a manufactured one. http://www.iboats.com/Transom_Eleva...k plate--**********.683001362--view_id.168950

you can also make one with 4 pieces of 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 aluminum angle (home Depot hardware dept, 8 3/8" nuts, bolts and 16 washers. a 2ft piece of 2x6.

you bolt the angle to the 2 on the inside and 2 on the outside on the transom, and insert the 2x6, and bolt it in. this is as good as the $164.00 one. or you can install a mini jacker.

Thanks I think I'll take your advice and make my own. I always like the low budget option.

Thanks for this suggestion. My dad had called and asked me to figure out how to shorten his outboard, and this is the first place I came. He wanted me to reply and tell you "Thanks", and that "you just saved him a ton of money, since he already has all of these materials in his shop."

Thanks!

And, may he rest in peace, Tashasdaddy has passed on. He was a big help though, like a lot of these guys around here are.
