97 merc 3.0lx alpha 1 genII I believe.

Took boat out for its first trip of the season. I got the boat ready the last few weeks in my driveway which included running it for close to 30 minutes. Plus I started it in the driveway this morning before we went to the ramp(always used the muffs, and hose).

We go idle out to the channel and then get the boat on plane, buddy brought his gps so I wanted to see what actual speed was so I hammered down, after about 20 seconds of close to full throttle, my trim gauge went up to 3/4 up at the same time the boat started to slow down, I immediately dropped throttle down to neutral, and lowered my outdrive again...Now Im puzzled and im thinking my trim cylinders must be leaking or something.....I made sure drive was full down, and took off again, but this time at cruising speed. got to our fishing spot and shut down. 45 minutes later,I go to leave and boat cranks over but no fire so I put in throttle only (neutral) give it gas and now it wont even crank over. dead as can be. I put full throttle down and I hear my trim pump kick on and my outdrive raises without hitting the up/down button on trottle...And its only with throttle handle pegged full down... So I fiddle around little longer, then raise drive to full up trailer, then full down...and she cranks and fires up. We immediately head to the ramp.

So its obvious something is wrong in the throttle/gear shifter/ kill switch area... Pinched wire or something but it about left me stranded on the lake.

Being that it only happens in close to full throttle would explain why I didnt have problems in my drive as I would never rev motor that high on hose.

And ideas on what to look at/for?
I have never looked inside that throttle assembly before so it will be all greek to me.

Sorry im long winded here but Im trying to give all the details possible

Sounds like chafed wires or a bad connection.....
A pic would help with ID......;)

If you're using the Mercury throttle/shift control and it's gotten loose and the wires are chafing as Haut indicated there's any number of things that could happen depending on which wires are being chafed.

up/down trim, (if the trim limit is exceeded the engine won't start) you may have a n ignition wire (purple I think) in there getting chafed so it might crank but it won't start. You may also have an open fuse or two by now too.

Have a look below... it may help. you'll want to determine if your model/serial is covered by that manual. Mercury wiring diagrams are pretty standard though

Re: oh boy...

Ok, I got the plate loose and looked under it...There is what appears to be 4 or 5 bolts, and while looking under the rail its mounted to (as best as I can see) it looks like 2 of those bolts are just Nut and bolt thru the rail to hold the shifter package on...I did see where the wire is rubbing and the jacket appears to be worn off....Problem is I cant get in there. How is the handle attached to the unit? It appears the handle will have to come off as the rub looks like its right where the wires go up inside of the unit... Im sure it sounds confusing as heck, but I dont know how else to describe it.

Heres one time I wish I was a little dude, barely enough room for a couple fingers around there.

Calling for tstorms tomorrow so hopefully they are wrong, and I get to try and fiddle with it.

Re: oh boy...

Ok I took off 3 bolts that just bolted the shift unit to the side walls. I can see the wires are chaffed, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the handle off...If I could separate the handle from the mounting plate, I could gain easy access to the bare wires... Anybody know, or anybody have blown up pics on how to work on this thing?

Im at a loss right now.

Re: oh boy...

Don you are awesome....That is exactly what I am looking for, Had it off in 2 minutes.

Thanks a million bud. Now I got to decide how I want to protect these wires from rubbing again. Im thinking shrinktube or something like that, but I would have to disconnect the wires to the trim switch to slip the shrinktube on...I would like to do something better then just a few wraps of electrical tape.

Any ideas.

Previous owner had all the slack control wires tie wrapped under the side rail out of site, and didnt leave enough slack to allow full range of motion of throttle without rubbing...Just FYI.

Re: oh boy...

I would bet that having the wires to tight is what caused the problem to begin with. If you use shrink tubing it could make it to "Non Bending" and create a worse chafe.
What I have done in the past that works very well, is to eliminate the switch in the handle and put a toggle switch in an easy location to reach for trim. It's not something you need to use every second (unless you are racing) and it makes it a lot easier (and cheaper) to fix and make usable.

Glad to hear that dowload site worked. Obviously you didn't have any problems. ??????

Thanks again.

Re: oh boy...

Yeah, now that I have it apart,I kinda feel stupid as easy as it was ...But I wasnt trying to force anything to go with fear of breaking it... I did have to use a small screwdriver to the neutral only button to pop out. I couldnt tell you how many times I tried to pull that out and stopped, for fear of breaking before that last link was posted.

Thanks again.

Re: oh boy...

I had that same problem but was at the lake I boat on. Had dial up internet at the in-laws and took me about an hour to find out how to take the handle off. Glad you found out. Was real easy once we had the instructions.
