Tips, tricks, hints, suggestions of things to come

This weekend I hope to start putting my powerhead back together for an 85 'Rude 90hp. I wound up ordering a rebuild kit off of eBay that included new pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin bearings, circlips, rod bearings, t-stat kit, crank seals and a gasket set. I've been reading my OMC Service Manual regularly trying to familiarize myself with the reassembly procedure. I also took lots and lots of pictures during disassembly in case I had questions putting this back together.

But my question is, are there any tips and/or tricks or "nice-to-knows" I should be aware of when putting this back together? The manual seems straight-forward however I'm concerned I don't have any of the special tools they recommend. Are these a neccesity when reassembling the powerhead or can I make do?

So any last minute advice you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Once I have the powerhead complete, I plan on cleaning and rebuilding the carbs (as well as re-jetting it but that's another story), putting new seals in the lower unit and new seals in the T/T unit.

If you don't have a torque wrench, get one. Maybe two, an inch pound and a foot pound. It's absolutely essential to torque stuff by the book. Otherwise, trust in luck.

Hey Reggie08!!.... Make sure you use a GOOD ring compresser and dont be stingy with the oil on assembly.. Make sure you wash that block with some HOT soapy water to remove any debris that may have settled in it during shipment and wipe out with oily rag so no rust forms. E me you set sizes and will see if I have some. Will need to go up .002 on the .030 and .003 on the .040. Good luck!!:D

Ordered the kit from Tri-State Marine on eBay. Had him send it with 3 pistons at .030 and 1 piston at .040. So far he seems to be easy to work with ;)

Faztbullet,
I'll send you a PM about the ring sets. The kit I ordered is coming with ring sets (that was the other thing I left that I couldn't remember  )

FR,
Don't have a torque wrench however my dad is sending his up from Dallas to torque everything. :)

The inch-lb one is more needed than the ft-lb one. BTW, who bored the block for you?

I bored a replacement block for him, same year and model. Here is a pic of ring compressor I suggest using. Can be purchased at Sears, Pep Boys, Autozone, NAPA.

Faztbullet did. :)

I'll hit the autoparts stores in town to see what they have for ring compressors.
