hi everyone . well i just went and picked up my boat with my freshly rebuilt 140 johnson , they even installed the water temp gauge i ordered for it , i bought 6 cans of beer for that job . anyway when i was leaving the dealer he told me to use double oil for the first two tanks , and not go over half throttle. he also told me to use a good grade of oil and do not use wallys oil . he said they have had a few motors come in that were shot ,when he asked the customer what brand of oil they were using they said wally brand . any thoughts on this ?

A lot of people here run Walmart oil with no problems. For break in i think i would take a couple gallon jugs to your local Evinrude dealer and have them fill them. That way if there is a problem they can't blame you for not using the correct oil.

Have an engine failure and the oil ALWAYS gets the blame. Unless of course it is the oil that they sell. If it says "Certified TC-W3" and has the NMMA logo, it has been tested and passed the NMMA requirements. Double talk like "meets TC-W3 requirements" does not count. It has to be certified and have the logo. Of course, then somebody makes the claim that theirs is "better" than it has to be. I have a quart of Texaco that is marked Certified TC-W3 and has the logo. Paid 69 cents for it at the dollar outlet.

I'd see it more as a predictor of not following directions.

If the dealer recommends Evinrude oil and provides a set of break-in instructions. What do you want to bet the folks that went and bought different oil also didn't follow the break-in instructions?

Probably a good point there. We sold a used motor to a guy and on the first trip out he headed straight out into the Gulf of Mexico. Of couse if any motor was going to give any trouble, it had to be that one.

Re: wally oil ?

Of all the engines I have rebuilt, I have never seen a oil related failure unless oiling system failed or mixed improperly. My fishing partners boat has a 225 Johnson and over 600 hours on it before we went thru it . All that was every run was Wally oil and it ran WOT every time it hit the water. Engine was clean inside and very little cokeing around the rings. All I run is Wally & Pennzoil in my stuff. The changes in fuel quality over the years has left fuel with a shelf life of about 15 days, and now they added 10% ethanol. This is tough on engines as octane points drop, water is asorbed for the air. The killers of engine I see are: bad T-stats (engine to cold) Bad impellers ( engine to hot) Propped wrong (lugging engine) Improper Timing, and improper fuel oil mixture( more oil is not OK, it will lean mixture as jets cannot flow correctly)

For many years, in several different Johnny/Rude engines that I owned, I ran nothing but Walmart oil. Never had any problems due to oil. I have since switched to Pennzoil semi-synthetic for no other reason that it smokes a lot less and doesn't carbon up as much.

What faztbullet said: More oil is not Ok. That's a little known fact. I worked on a chainsaw for way more hours than I'm going to admit--till I figured out that it just had too much oil in the mix.
