Where to buy .025 feeler gauge?

I'm in the process of putting my outdrive back together, and the manual calls for using a .025 feeler gauge that's round and long, to check clearance between the gears. I've gone to several boat repair facilities and auto parts stores, and they all say Snap On. I've called Snap On and they weren't able to find anything like it. I can't get the local franchise to call me back, either. Is there a place on the internet that I can buy this thing? Is there something I can substitute (i.e. 22 gauge wire)? Does Snap On call it something else? Mercruiser doesn't list a part # for this tool. Any help is appreciated. TIA.

He wants round, and that link is for flat.

Go to any weld supply store, and pick up a Welders torch "Tip Cleaner" set. Cheap, and on mine, #3 is .025. Cut off the coarse file part (there like 5 inches long, plenty smooth left)

I know exactly what he is trying to do, and trust me, he needs flat feeler gauges.
Who knows what he is reading that says round. Probably Clymers or Seloc. But that is NOT how it's done.
There are special tools for setting gear heights, and you just can't use a round gauge.

if your setting your pinion you need the shim gauge and the feeler gauge set i already posted...
That IS the only way to do it!!
Hope that helped :)

Re: Where to buy .025 feeler gauge?

Well guys, I went back out to the garage and rechecked the shop manual, and you're right - I'm checking the clearance between the special tool and the gear, not between the gears. So, I need the blade type, not a round one. The manual shows the profile of the feeler, so I incorrectly assumed it was round. I'm using the Mercruiser manual that I printed off from Don's link from a few months ago (but isn't active anymore).

Thanks for the prompt feedback. I can stop driving myself crazy. Why didn't those boat mechanics tell me about this? They must have been laughing it up when I left. Or they misunderstood what I was talking about. Oh well, that's why I asked the experts here!!

Thanks again! I'll be getting those snap-on's....

Since you probably didn't print ALL the pages of that manual, here is a link to the same one, just a different place, and harder to use.
Scroll to the outline page, and click on the LETTER of the section you want to view (or better yet, save to your computer).

Feeler gauges come in a variety of combinations. If you can't find .025, use a .020 and a .005. or a .010 and .015, or a -- well -- you get th idea.

so out of couriousty, what are ya shimming on. from the link provided, it must be an alpha1? what are you shimming on yer alpha1?
i did the drive gear shim on a model 1 drive with just a regular feeler gage. looks like if its the driven gear, them long snapon feelers would work real good. heres a cheap idea. looks like the problem could be depth of the hole yer working in. how boughts a reg. feeler gage + take it out of the stack and put some hemostats on it. that'd make it longer, and the stats might not interfer with the depth..... don't know if it'd work, just a thought.

I'll be doing both the drive and driven on Alpha One. I already ordered the snap-ons. Thanks Don, for the link once again!

I have to assume that means both the upper and lower units.

you need to thank CaptJason for the link to the gauges, I didn't post it.

Hey, I was thanking for the MANUAL, not the feeler!!! j/k!!!:p

Seriously, thanks for all the info. I do have all the tools/items capt listed, and I have most of everything together now. This turned out to be quite involved, and it kept me out in the garage quite a while!!

Slowly but surely this thing is getting back together - i hope in a couple of months i can have her back in the water.....
