As in a previous post I'm working on a Fiberglass Canoe, I'm having a hard time finding Epoxy resin and Mat here.. I also can only find 6oz cloth..

I have been doing some reading and I have read that the poly doesn't stick as well to old fiberglass like epoxy...

Is this True??

You can probably find your epoxy resin and a local boat dealer/store. It will probably be West System epoxy which is expensive, but shouldn't be too bad since you can probably get by with the smallest quantity they sell.

3 or 4 layers of 6oz cloth will probably get you to the same thickness as the hull which is what you're shooting for.

I have read that poly doesn't stick to poly that's already been cured as well as epoxy will. Remember, you're getting a mechanical bond only here. I have never used poly so I can't speak from experience.

If you read polyester doesn't stick to cured polyester, then you've been lied to. That sounds a little blunt, but either they lied, or they know nothing about what they're talking about. Either product will make a more than adequate repair on a canoe, or most any other polyester water craft also.

I have read that poly doesn't stick to poly that's already been cured as well as epoxy will. Nobody's saying it doesn't stick.

Like I said, I've never used it, but numerous sources say that while poly is great for boat building it does not have the great adhesive properties that epoxy does.

I told him he'd be fine using either one in his other thread.

The sticking better part is correct, the problem is most people have no clue as to what "better" actually means, so it gets to the point of where people start saying polyester won't stick. The truth is in typical applications you will "never" see a difference, so it makes no difference which one gets used.

He knows his glass better than probably anyone else on this forum. I did my rebuild with polyester and it worked great. Could not justify the expense of epoxy. Just have to make sure you do your prep work and you will not have any problems.

Have a great day,

Re: Poly Resin ??

The main reason I like to recommend epoxy for people here is that the extra adhesion properties make it better for new boat repairers... there's a margin of error possible that's not there with poly resin. It gets recommended a lot for home boat builders for the same reason.

That said if you do proper prep work, have some ability to fiberglass or are willing to practice beforehand, then poly resin will work fine for your need.

It's like the difference between using steel and aluminum for an expensive (writing) pen... the only thing you'll notice is that one's lighter, the strength difference is irrelevant in that application.

Defender is the least expensive source of epoxy that I have found at this moment. Google them. I personally like the West system as I have had no failures with it and some with poly and other suppliers of epoxy. Note it could be me and not the product.

man.......yer just doin a canoe....dont overthink this !

walk to wallmart....buy some poly resin and some cloth. and some aceitone.and fix your boat!

total cost 40 bucks.

see the hull extension thread on poly surface prep.....sand/grind...clean with aceitone and glass.

i didnt read your other thread, so i dont know how big the repair area would be... but by the time youve read all the posts on here....it could have been fixed
