What happened to my OMC?

Sadly, I went to get my boat (1981 Celebrity) out for the summer and found two cracks (one on each side) of my lower unit when I was putting the muffs on it. Oil was coming out both sides. It's a 800 OMC stern drive with a 3.8L engine.

Does anyone know why this happened? I know water expanded somehow cracked it but I changed the gear oil before putting it away last fall. Should I have covered up the whole outdrive.

Also, does anyone know what I need to repair this? Can I somehow get a new low unit housing or something? I'm thinking I will scrap the boat unless I find a cheap lower unit. Thanks for the input.

Look for a used lower unit or GLM makes parts to whole stinger drives. I would replace it. New or used is your choice. Download a GLM catalog from their website and search on the part number.

Great, thank you. Do you think this is a result of not covering the outdrive up and water got in there? I didn't think it would crack the lower unit case.
