I've got a 20'2" Key West dual console boat. It's heavy and considered an "offshore" boat. The boat weighs about 2000lbs with no motor. It has a 130 Honda and hits 40 mph empty and 32 mph with the typical crew and gear.

It almost will not plane out with my typical gear and crew, therefore I want to repower. The MAX rating for the boat is 200hp.

Will I see a large improvement in power by increasing 70 hp?

Any motors seem superior in the 200hp range? (Money not really a factor)
I do love my current HONDA- sips gas, DEAD quiet, reliable so fat at 350hrs.
Been looking at Yammy, Evinrude, Merc, Suzuki, Honda

the rule of thumb for minimum hp is 70% of the rated HP. 200 rated= 140 hp minimum. you will see a terrific increase in performance. all you mentioned are good, which has the best service center in your area. you can't beat a Yammy 4 stroke, except with an Etec.

The Suzuki 175 "big block" seems like a good choice. A real torque monster.

Welcome to the forum!!:):)
All good motors but as stated above it's more important that you have a good service place nearby.

The Suzuki 175HP is a four cylinder with a 175 CI block. It has the multi-stage induction and the variable valve timing technology. The 200 on the other hand has a 220 CI block with a V-6 cylinder configuration, but without the multi stage induction or the VVT valve train. Tough call. The 175 may perform as well, but the 200 may be smoother. I can?t imagine the 175 could out-torque the bigger block 200, but it may be close and would likely be better on fuel. Personally I?d go with the Yamaha 200 with it?s proven reliability and much larger dealer network. The 2-strokes will be much louder than you?re used to having had a Honda.

You made me sign up to chime in on this one. I figured it was something i actually knew something about. Anyways I got a 130 H as well with a 21' boat a bit heavier than yours, and loaded with incredible amounts of weight i.e. working in the boat salvage business. I did the tramson work and the i.b to o.b. conversion the "general"' prop that came with motor reminded me of what you spoke of, hitting the gas and waiting 5 miles for the r.p.m.'s to climb like waiting for the titanic to plane, i didn't have more than one unloaded outing to realize that wasn't going to work, so i luckily stumbled on pro-pulse propellers and long story short best thing hands down, can't put any amount of weight into that boat without it jumping out of the hole instantly. Been running it heavily loaded most of the time for 5 years now. I will NEVER go back.

Re: Repowering 20ft offshore boat (heavy) had a Honda 130

Hello there,

I have a 2006 model 2020DC. It has a 150 hp 4 stroke Yamaha and will hit 49.7 mph, when empty, according to the gps. It has a Yamaha Reliance series prop that lets it get to 5800 rpm's at wot. If my extra 20 hp is giving me 10 extra mph's, I'm sure 70 more hp than what you have now will make that thing fly. Might need some trim tabs with a 200 though. I am very happy with my boat, but if I ever have to re-power I will max it out with a 200hp engine.:D

That's quite a bit faster for only 20 more HP.

Appearently no one is recommending the Honda 200. Surprised. I have dealers locally for all major outboards so that is really not a factor.

I'm getting trim tabs regardless of the motor so I can get on plane.

All opinions are appreciated on which particular outboards stand out in this power range.

Thanks for the opinions!!!!

You really should give the Etec a close look. You surely can't beat the hole shot.breakin,3year/300hour no maintenance.Check the BRP sight.many many performance reports forget the challenges/comparisons.

Ditto. The 200 small block E-Tec would be a very strong consideration I would think. However, as already stated - it's really a matter of who is strong in service, parts and customer satisfaction in your area.

You'd probably get more reply if you started a new thread in the Prop section. But there's not a "standard" on prop size on any hp. Lots of factor to consider...i.e. boat size & weight.

I have the same boat with the same HP (except 2 stroke) and I get 46 mph with a 17, that is why I'm curious of the size of his prop
