I'm not sure if I understand what I heard today from a friend. In the (near) future when your car has reached its lifespan, you then must take it to an authorized scrap yard. Once you turn the title and car over to them, you will receive a voucher for a new car. I have heard this from several people who work in the scrap business. BTW scrap steel/cars is going for $300 a ton right now. I'm curious to know what is really going on. Please keep this post free of any references to the government. I know it will be hard to do, but no bashing or name calling. Any info on the above of what you may have heard will be appreciated......Thanks SS

To prevent a lock on the thread and you have info on the proposed plan,,,,,please PM me...Thanks again :D

Rumors like this get started all of the time. The simple way to analyze them is to ask yourself if the social strata of the nation could stand the strain of it's implimentation.

Most of the lower class (read beginning families and temporarily out of luck) can not afford a new car, yet they need the transportation. Their employers need their transportation, etc.

Pretty silly rumor isn't it?

A friend of mine is headed to DC this weekend with others about this matter. Others in different states that are in the scrap business is also attending. So I'm not real sure that this is a rumor. If so, it will be a long cold and wet ride for them on their bike.

Sorry, no I haven't. Just going by what my bud says. His business is buying and scrapping out cars/trucks. This has him worried as this can put him out of business eventually. According to him this is part of the works to make things greener (global warning). Get rid of the old gas guzzlers that pollute and what better way than to mandate a scrap order. It has already been done for the 70 models and now onto the 80's.

Still trying to get my boat together. I'll try to find some stuff on the net later on about it.

Ummm, when was it done for the 70's? I know of no order to scrap 70's cars ... and no voucher for owners to get new cars. I think your buddy is either an alarmist, or he told you this on April 1st?!? ;)

I have some friends in the car business, and some in the scrap business, and no one has told me any of this, and I certainly haven't read it in any automotive mags or in Automotive News ... That doesn't mean that my word is the authority, but I can't imagine any legislator trying to get that legislation through, or anyone in the automotive industry allowing it to happen.

Does not sound far-fetched to me.

Scrap yards have all kind of Hazmat, so it's possible that the "Those People" could come up with requirements for expensive and difficult to get "permits", to operate scrap yards. This will weed out the small guy, but will surely help out steel prices too - NOT.

Texas already has a deal for a $3,000 voucher, if your car is 10 years or older, or will not pass an emissions test. The voucher is for buying a 3 year old car or newer. The are some income guidlines, etc, for this deal.

Only a matter of time.

I wish we were getting $300 a ton for scrap cars. Current prices here (Waco Texas M. Lipsitz Recycling) is $200 a ton for Tin (aplliances, tin, lawnmowers etc). Cars bring $205 a ton. Clean copper (piping or wire with insulation gone) goes for $3.30 a pound. Just 2 days ago I sold 560 pounds of aluminum breakage for $.25 a pound. Prices here are way up but not near as high as ya'lls.

Re: Used car lots maybe gone

It only gives them some money toward a new vehicle though... and $3000, is nowhere near what a new car costs... also, since you are talking about the low income people to begin with, even with $3000 off a newer vehicle, they still can't come anywhere near being able to afford one. My guess is, there are a lot of poor people being suckered into giving up a perfectly drivable piece of transportation in exchange for something they can't use.

Sounds like a bad idea to me... just makes the poor poorer, and might turn some of the working poor, into the on welfare poor because they couldn't afford the other $10,000.00 a new vehicle would cost.

Re: Used car lots maybe gone

Say what?
Still plenty of 60's and 70's cars running around here.

This mandate (or whatever it is) only deals with salvage yard cars. In other words if your an old car buff and need some parts, you won't be able to get them thru a salvage yard because the salvage yard is to shred them.

Several old established salvage yards in this area has been shut down due to property contamination of the fluids that come from these vehicles. This property cannot be sold or built on until the whole area is cleaned by the EPA or authorized hazmat company.

People that are into the clean air and non polluting cars don't care about the collectiors or the not-so-well-off peoples old cars.

I too doubt that used car lots will be out of business, but this idea of forcing the public to get rid of their transportation because the car won't pass emissions is absurd IMO.

Thanks Bob for finding those sites. I think there is more info out there, but it is knowing where and what exactly to search for.

The prices of scrap going up is unreal. Cars getting the converters cut off and stolen. The cheapest to the most paying ones go from $160 to $280 per converter. Just depends what make and model of the vehicle. So if you bought a junk full size van for $300, it is possible to make up to $500 just by scrapping it out. Then there was a problem of stolen cars getting shredded for the money. Thanks to a good law, the shredders are now required to have a title for each car being brought in. This too can be a pain especially for those real old up on blocks kinda cars that haven't been titled in decades.

This I feel is something that needs to be watched as it will effect many people, especially the lower income bracket.

I'll post more on the subject when my bud gets back from DC.

Re: Used car lots maybe gone

The Texas plan is based on the income derived from the smog inspection fees we have been paying for twenty years. The state government has millions sitting around that 'has' to be spent.

Sorry, I know you requested no mention of government. It was merely an explanation of the plan. :)

For convertors we get $15 a piece. Those prices you posted are ones being sold to yards who are reselling them to the people they were stole from in the first place.

You may want to look up SEMA. They put out a newsletter I get every month that deals with auto related issues. I beleive its called Action News Outlook. I remember this being in there buts its been a while back.

Well

While not a ban in PA your VERY limited on body rust through which takes many cars with no real safety problem off the road
