Sorry but I had no one else to turn to :) I'm looking for a decent cheap first boat.

Great opportunity to own a turn-key boat and trailer just in time for this summer!

1987 Bluewater Eagle open-bow pleasure boat with a Mercruiser 175hp V6. This boat has the power to easily pull skiers, wakeboarders and inflatables.

Recent upgrades include a new throttle and 4-speaker am/fm cd player with an input for your ipod. This boat also has an antenna for a Sirius satellite radio.

Boat is in good condition...not perfect, but real nice looking and it runs awesome. I have all the service records from myself and the previous two owners (one of which was my father-in-law.)

Come see it, and you will be taking it home with you. I will start it in my driveway to show you how great it runs.

Also included is a Baker tandem-axle trailer, boat cover (somewhat raggedy) and full canvas covers and bimini tops, extra prop and other misc boat stuff.

The guy's asking 4000...what say you experts of iboats?

Thanks for the help.

20 years old---high.
Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

I'm going to be using it for mainly cruising and a little water sports. Probably have 4-7 people on it.

Price is a little high. It would have to be immaculate to warrant that price. Good power for that size boat. If the floor and transom are solid I'd say $2500-$3000.

How many hours on the motor? Is the seller open to a sea trial? Dont jump into anything. The economy is in the dumps right now.It is a buyers market. If this one sells there will be others.:)

the guy just got back to me and says that it has under 300 hrs on it which seems good for a boat that old, correct?

I would not pay $4000.00 for a 1987 boat unless it was in immaculate condition, But i know some people do

That's a premium price for that boat, for sure. Yes, the guy will start it in the driveway, but that's not nearly enough. You need a sea trial, as well, and I'd strongly urge that you have the boat surveyed by a pro.

I'd also want to know the complete service history on it. For that money, I'd expect to see receipts and service records.

Next, was this boat operated in salt water? Since you are in Seattle, I'm betting that it was. That's another issue to consider, since salt water can cause damage you can't see to the engine and drive. Check the anodes. They should have been replaced at least once with those hours.

If the guy won't take you in the water in the boat and put it through its paces, run, don't walk, away from it. If he balks at having it surveyed, do the same.

If you're going to spend more money than most similar boats of that vintage cost, then you should expect near perfection.

I went to the Seattle Craigs List site and saw the boat you're talking about. It appears that boat prices are quite high in that area, so this one may not be out of line for your local market. In fact, I was shocked at the prices folks were asking.

Still, all the cautions given by folks are in order.

Yeah, they do seem to be compared to what most of you on here are saying. So with that being said, is this a boat that I should consider?

Thanks again for all of your feedback.

Judging from what I saw, I'd consider it. The local market always determines the price range. I'm betting the guy will take less for it, though, assuming you're happy with the boat.

Just don't buy a pig in a poke with this. Sea trial. Survey. Bargain with the guy.

If you take it on a sea trial, use like you would as if you owned it.Starts from idle to full throttle. How fast it gets to plane.Run it wide open throttle. Is it enough power for you?Listen for telltale noises.Operate the power trim.Check the bilge for excess water.Dont be shy. Also ask about the trailer.Tires, bearings, wiring and signs of rust should all be checked.:)
