Have any of you Guys ever heard that,......

When an Outboard motor's T-Stat sticks Open,.... And runs Stone Cold,.....

Or with an Outdrive,.... If you switch to a Thru-Hull Exhaust, with no Hot cooling water being dumped down the exhaust cavity,......

That Either of these senerios will cause the,........ Prop Hub to Slip,+ Trash the rubber Hub,..??..??..??

This Question is in relation to an article in this month's issue of Go Boating magazine.......

I've Never in My Life heard of such a thing...............

The sterndrive scenario at least sounds plausible. It's not true, cause I have personally switched to thru hull and blocked off the Y-Pipe. Mercruiser even sells the block off plate.
So once again, your favorite guy there is making stuff up, or getting "taken" by someone who wants to see him publish amazingly dumb stuff.

I read somewhere that too hot exhaust was causing hub failures on certain applications, 4 stroke outboards?some sort of minor hub/exhaust change resulted I believe.

There are outboard scenarios that cause a hub to burn but it's certianly not from the t-stat being open and dumping extra water in the exhaust (cooler, not hotter).

Ayuh,....

Thanks for the responces Guys,.... More Opinions needed,+ wanted though......

The "Expert" this came from says that without the Heat from the exhaust water, the Hubs will disintegrate....

I Know that I don't know Everything,+ I try to Learn something new Everyday,....
But,......
In My Commonsensical mind,....... This just sounds Too Bogus to be True......

Whoa! Let's think a little. What about props without thru hub exhaust? They run cold all the time. They don't spin the hubs any more or less than thru-hub exhaust models. So much for another urban legend--in my opinion. But, of course, you didn't pay for it so that's what it's worth.

Sounds like BS to me!

"We don't need no stinkin thermostat, Mon!"

Sorry to say, I have a confession to make, I'm the guy who usually takes out the thermostats to change them on all my marine motors, outboard, & inboard, (then conveniently leave them out) so they can run as rich, & cold, as possible, as I usually run them pretty hard in summer weather, and I only ruined the hub on one prop, but that was from WOT bottom dredging!:redface: Not from having no thermostat?
Nor do I know of anyone this has happened to

I will never run one without the stats other than to verify trouble, but there used to be some sort of issue with OMC because they built a slot into the trim-tab to carry (Pressure) water back up, over and down thru the prop for help in cooling the hub. This may have been theory more than fact, or it may have been a different composition of hub material, but I know now it has no effect because my tab is about an inch above the water. At high RPM, the by-passes open and dump extra water anyway...that's all (part) going across the hub anyway.
