Hi all!

I'm a new boat owner and have found this site and the search function to be awesome in answering some of my newbie questions. I have a 14 ft alum jon with a 1962 Evinrude 10 hp Sportwin (Mod. #10024). I haven't started it yet though.

Some simple questions I haven't found answers to yet:
(1) How much oil does the lower unit hold?
(2) I haven't visited my local NAPA yet, but are simple things like the lower unit drain & fill crush gaskets something they carry or have to order? How much lead time to they usually take?
(3) What is the bulb in the fuel line for?
(4) I see what looks like the shift lever on the starboard side. I take it forward is front and reverse is to the rear?
(5) The throttle handle has Start Slow Shift Stop and Fast. I can only move the throttle from Start to Fast (while engine off). I don't want to force it towards the other settings for fear of breaking something, but it also looks like it won't go any further beyond Start as I can see the set screw that looks like it probably controls the cold idle/start speed and that keeps the throttle from turning towards the other settings.

Thanks for any and all help!

Re: Evinrude Sportwin Familiarization

Welcome to iBoats. I'll answer some of your questions and others will help out on the rest hopefully.

1) I think it's around 8-10 oz but I forget. To drain the old oil open both screws (not the phillips) and drain. Then refill from the lower hole to force the air out the top.
2) Some NAPA's do carry it and some dont from what I understand. I do not know if they have the crush washers or not. But make sure you do get them. IBoats sells then I believe as well as your local OMC/BRP dealer.
3) The bulb in the fuel line is to manually pump and fill the carb before starting it. Thus pump a few times until hard before starting.
4) Yes, forward is towards the front of the boat, reverse is to the back and neutral is in the middle. Always start in neutral.
5) the throttle will not go to fast when the engine is in neutral. When you shift to forward it will go all the way to fast. When starting turn as far as it will go and it should be around start.

I have the same engine :)

Re: Evinrude Sportwin Familiarization

Thanks Steve. (And also to Tashasdad and Hightrim (Chris) for their answers in my accidental double post!).

A couple more questions, please?
(A) Where is the water intake, the exhaust outlet, and the tattletale or water discharge? I want to start it in my driveway and need to figure out how deep to imerse it.

(B) Another throttle clarification question. Can you tell me if this is normal? The range of motion of the throttle is limited and doesn't change whether in neutral or forward or reverse (engine off). I think I am understanding that this may only change once the engine is started? I get less than 90 degrees of handle twist regardless of shifter position for now.

(C) If I look at the engine while sitting in the boat, the molded-in arrow of the handle can be moved between the 10 o'clock and 12 o'clock settings with 10 o'clock showing Fast and 12 showing Start (Shift is 1 o'clock, Slow is 2, and Stop is at 3). It doesn't look like the label ring can slip, but it does look like it can be installed backwards...or maybe my molded in indicator/handle installed wrong and pointing to the wrong label? So, here's the question: Does turning the handle counter-clockwise open the throttle?

Thanks again!

Re: Evinrude Sportwin Familiarization

you don't have a taletell, you have a hole 1/2 up the back side of the leg, it is call a exhaust relief port, for the exhaust at idle, you should at least get a mist out of there at idle. the exhaust, is just above the prop, along with the water pickup.

the motor has to be run in a barrel, with the leg submerge to just below the relief ports.

the neutral lock out lever may not be clearing the timing plate.

a picture of the suspect area would help.

you can up load to a free service like photobucket.com then you choose the pictures you want( clik the little box at the bottom left of the picture) scrool to the bottom of the page, clik generate html, it will take you to the next page, scroll down to thumb nails clik on that and copy, then insert it into your post.

also if you are planing on posting pictures, you can use the Blue post reply or the go advanced, manage attachments, there you can upload , directly from your computer. besure you pictures have been resized to fit the format.
