Polarizing a generator

On my 1964 Evinrude 75hp I recently installed a generator belt. My manual indicates that it is VERY important to polarize the generator before use. When is this polarization supposed to be performed, every time the battery is disconnected? I don't even know if this generator even works but I thought I would give it a try.

It would be very unusual if that generator requires polarizing. If it doesn't function as it should, you could try it BUT it's something that really isn't needed normally. It is not required every time you dsiconnect the battery.

"flashing" or "polarizing" a generator is something that is really only performed on a new generator.

However, if it doesn't work, a test called "motoring" will tell if the generator is good. A side benefit is that will also polarize it at the same time. Can't hurt, might help

Thank-you for the replies. I rely on you three the most.

I did connect the battery to the generator and it turned. This was recommended to me in a thread last summer when I was considering looking for a belt for it. Since it tested good, I bought a couple of belts for it.

So, I should just run the engine and see if it charges? I'm assuming I can put a multi-meter on the battery set to DC volts and see if it rises when the motor is running at a good clip.

Yes, it has to run about 2000rpm before the relay cuts in to make it start charging.
