You have to remove the power head to unhook the shifter.Sounds scary but as I understand it no big deal.
No service manual? You may find one at the library.

I am not God, but I do talk to him.
Seriously, you have to pull the powerhead. While you are ordering parts, get a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring for the carbon seal. You will know what I am talking about when you get in there. Don't ignore this advice!! That is a vital assembly and will destroy the motor if it leaks. Some numbers for you:

391391 complete water pump kit.
379764 just the water pump impeller if you are cheap.
303467 powerhead gasket if your motor is mounted on springs
306205 powerhead gasket if your motor is mounted on rubber
303355 gasket for carbon seal plate
303347 o-ring for carbon seal
Parts available from your Johnson or Evinrude dealer.
If you go for the complete pump kit you will find it is different than the old one. Don't worry, it's better.

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

You didn't give the model number or exact year, but the basics are remove the 7 screws holding the powerhead on, and disconnect / remove any hoses, carburetor controls, or linkages that prevent it from lifting off.

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

anyone know how old this thing is, here is the model no. 5D15B serial no. 690893 what would be a fair price to ask for this engine, it is in perfect working condition, no parts needed, runs great, but the paint is a little chipped up she is old lol

It is a 1958. Does it still have all the plastic medallions, unbroken?

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

it is a 1958 your right i found it online also, 1958 Buccaneer Gale 5 hp with forward , neutral, reverse, high and low adjustments on the front, all the knobs. and all ALLLL of the emblems are like brand new, i dont even think they are scratched, well maybe scrathed but not much if at all. if it had new paint on it it would look new again pretty easy i think. I was told NOT to paint it though.

Keep it as a backup, pass it on to a younger relative when they get old enough to get interested in boats/motors.

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

I'm new here - hope I'm posting this message in the right place! I have my dad's 1961 (?) Gale 5 hp Model #5D19B, Serial #828246. It needs a water pump. Earlier in the thread the part numbers for an earlier model were given - would the water pump be the same for mine? Thanks!

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

I don't know that outboard, but, please read the thread at the top of the page that tells you how to get your questions answered. Tacking onto an old thread doesn't work, and this thread had a poor title, anyhow.

Try asking your question in a new thread, identifying the problem and the year and model of your outboard. Then, someone who knows that outboard will read the thread. Otherwise, your question may go unanswered.

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

eagle, yes your motor should be similar. Yours is mounted on rubber, so takes a 306205 powerhead gasket.

See you on a new thread if you need anything else.

Re: Calling All Outboard Gods !!!!

I am new to forums, and don't know how to start a new thread. If you can help me with that, I could ask my question there.

Otherwise, F R, is your earlier message with part numbers for a water pump for a 1958 5 hp Gale valid for my 1961 5 hp Gale? You said "similar", but that scares me!

Thanks!
