whats up?? I got this steel block merc 470, 165 hp inline 4, i bought a fresh water gimbal housing and alpha 1 outdrive, i have my old stuff off, every thing is the same except for the exhaust pipe, old one is four bolt, new one is 3, I have both pipes, but they are bent diffrent, i havent actually started putting it togather, and i have the old s pipe in between the coolant resovoir (oh yeah its fresh water cooled) and the pipe out the back of the gimbal housing, does anyone know if ineed a new set up between the resovoir and the exhaust pipe or can i just adjust the angles and make it work?? Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hate to tell you this, but there is no such thing as a steel block 470.
As far as the Y pipe, you have to find the right year for your engine and transom assembly (by SN,).

While you may not want to be educated in jargon, it might be good to know that the 470 does not have a steel block, it has an aluminum block. Not to speak for DonS, but I think that what he was saying is that there is no such thing as a steel blocked 470.... so if you have a "steel" or iron block, then you do not have a "470." If you do have a 470, then you have an aluminum block with a cast iron Ford head. Knowing WHAT you have may help others help you.

(But with only two posts, with remarks like "please useful info only dont need to be educated in jargain thanks" ... that's not likely to get many helpful answers.

Steel block- 120-140hp inline 4 cyl
Alum block- 160-180hp inlline 4
2 different motors.
Really need to know what the old was and what the new is.

Ayuh,........ We All Do........

The Exhaust Port on the front of the inner transom does Not interchange between the 4 bolt,+ the 3 bolt....
You need the Right Down-pipe to fit your motor.....

It Sounds like 1 is an Alpha,+ the other is a Mod.1.....

Ok. Im trying to keep my cool, its a 165 hp, inline 4 steel block that my local mercruiser DEALER reffers to as a 470, last time i checked alluminum doesnt make brown rust, the only question im asking is will my three bolt pipe coming out of the back of my new gimbal housing gonna work with my old intemidiate pipe and my coolant resovoir which was hooked up with a four bolt exhaust pipe, Im not trying to be a jerk but every ones arguing with me im im just looking for a simple yes or no, thanks for all with useful info, i do apprecite it and hope everyones boating season is off to a better start then mine.

Re: Gimbal assembly swap

One more time, the 470 is an aluminum block with a 460 cast iron head.
Has 2 major iron parts, the flywheel and the head.I gather you removed a cast iron block inline 4 cylinder "Iron Duke" type and are trying to install a 470 motor..
You need the correct Y pipe for your application. Exaust tubes are specific for the engine application. You might have to change the transom housing to make this motor fit in properly.
