Hello,

It's my first time at this forum and i'm enthusiastic.

I have a Johnson 35Hp 1977 with electric starter and i have some questions.

- Can i use unleaded fuel?

- When the engine runs suddenly stop working for a few milliseconds and then continues normally. After some time it is doing it again. Any idea about this problem?

- I use an ignition key to start the engine and works ok. The problem is when i want to stop it, i turn off the ignition switch but the engine still runs (so i have to remove the kill stop cord). Is it normal? Where the problem is?

Sorry for my poor English.
I am waiting for your help.

Thanxxx!!!

Is it stopping or is it sort of thumping like it hits something?

The engine not stopping and stopping for a second may be the same proplem.
The key uses a kill circuit, shorts the points to ground to stop.the wire may be loose and shorting from vibration causing the momentary stop.

You should try to get a service manual.maybe at the library.Aftermarket manuals are available right here at iboats. among other places.

Can i use unleaded fuel? Absolutely, but not the E85 ethanol blend that's appearing in some areas. 10% is OK.

When the engine runs suddenly stop working for a few milliseconds and then continues normally. After some time it is doing it again. Any idea about this problem? If it's at idle then it's probably running lean. Back the idle adjustment on the front of the engine out a little and see if it smooths out. If it's at high speed, you probably have an ignition problem.

I use an ignition key to start the engine and works ok. The problem is when i want to stop it, i turn off the ignition switch but the engine still runs (so i have to remove the kill stop cord). Is it normal? Where the problem is? When the key is in the stopped position, the yellow/black (ignition) wire is normally shorted to the black (ground) wire. If the key doesn't stop it, the connection from the y/b to ground is not being made.

Re: Johnson 35Hp 1977 questions

Thanks for the reply,

So i can use the simple unleaded fuel of 100 octane that i use for my car too?

The engine stops working (probably sort of thumping like it hits something) when it's at idle and high speed. Can i fix that easily?
Somebody told that maybe i have to clean the carb.
