1998 4.3 Mercruiser Alpha one Outdrive: Raw water cooling

Temp alarm sounded @ 175 Deg. while cruising at > 4500rpm.

When I back down to 3800 rpm temp is steady @ 160.

Is 175 a high temp. or is my alarm going off prematurely.

I did hook up the muffs when I got home wasn't able to get the temperature alarm to sound of course there was no real load on the engine.

I did notice that the starboard exhaust water was significantly hotter than the port. But like I said the temp never got above 160 with the muffs.

Any Input is appreciated.

No, nothing wrong with 175, the alarm sender is probably going bad and is different from the gauge sender. It should sound the alarm at about 210?

Thanks Don. Is it temp difference between the port and starboard normal when using the Muffs?
