It can be done, but can we ask why you would like to go to the 3 wire setup?

It is usually the other way around ;)

We used to do it all the time on the race boats. We found a 3 wire that was much faster. All you have to do is cut the "communication" wire between the two relays.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

Here is a visual to what Dhadley was saying. The first diagram is your current wiring, the second is how to modify it for a 2 wire motor. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck.

Your remote control is irrelevant, and can be used. Here is a better picture of your current set up, before the modification you want to do.

2wiremotorwithrelays.jpg

Simply cut and disconnect the 2 ground wires, and ground the black wire from the trim motor to ground, as per the first set of diagrams provided. Now when there is no power to the relay, there is no connection, and when there is power, you are getting 12V, which will either raise or lower your motor, depending on the button being activated. In my second original diagram, imagine that the 3 wires coming up from the bottom of the page are coming from the trim motor.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

I hooked up the old relay box to the trim it works. Well there is a delay between going up and down if I try to go up or down suddenly is that normal? The motor still runs while I have the switch depressed it takes a few seconds till it goes up or down but If I'm running I would need instant transfer. Maybe the oil is low? If so where do I add new oil to the unit. Thanks Jon 89' motor putting on around 80'or so trim.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

Im glad it worked for you.

There will be a large slotted screw in the front of the oil resevoir. First cycle the tilt fully out, top up the oil, cycle 5 to 6 times, bleeding the air from the system to the fully trimmed out position, re fill, cycle 5 to 6 times. Continue until full.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

Is the delay caused by a lack of oil? Because the motor is off of the boat rite now and if it is I will put it back on so I can get it ready and fill the oil back up.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

It is possible.

Also possible that there is a clogged passageway or internal valve, air in the system, etc...

Start with topping up the oil and bleeding the air.

Let us know what you find.

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

Also, does the delay happen when going from trim in to trim out, or when going from trim out to trim in, or both?

Re: two wire trim swap w/three wire

Not a problem at all, but again, does the delay happen when going from trim in to trim out, or when going from trim out to trim in, or both?
