How to replace propshaft seal Vovo SX drive '94?

Hi,

My outboard drive 9Volvo Sx 1994) leaks oil out of the prop opening. I removed the prop and the zinc anode. Also the little screw fixating the prop shaft support and the bracket inside. Still I cannot remove the prop support to get by the oil seal ???? Any help please.

Don't do anything else till you get the manual and the special tools to remove the retainer. There are also rolling torques issues that have to be measuered before you remove the retainer and carrier.

Thanks for the reply, but what you say is to buy a manual and special tools to do this job? Where can I buy these for my '94 Volvo outdrive? I'm pretty handy and rebuiding automotive engines.

Check your engine Model number. FULL model number if the letters MD are in it, then you have an MD model.
Look at the SX-MD manual. That is the one you want.

Special tools are hard to find. May need to visit your local VP dealer.

I would take it in, if its not salt water use its an hour or so to change the propshaft seal on an SX, if you must do it yourself then you will need the bearing carrier removal tool, a 3/4 drive breaker, a method of retorquing the carrier and the seal installer, if you try it with a socket you WILL damage the seal.
thats why the seal and original tool were both redesigned a few years back.
make sure the seal is green and the install tool is silver, the black seal and dark metal installer are no longer used but I still see a few dealers selling them.
while its a good idea to check the rolling torque its not mandatory on the SX as the shim sets the rolling torque, if it was right before it has no choice to be right after unless you change the shim or forget to install it.

Thx Rodbolt, Any good address were I can find the barrier removal tool? I have severall torque wrenches and the 3/4 drive breaker. I only need to find out how to connect them to the barrier rem. tool. Can I install the seal with a standard set automotive seal install tool?

you whack that seal with most anything other than the correct tool and odds are high you destroyed it, its a special double lipped seal and most socket walls are thick enough they hit the rubber where its bonded to the steel and destroys the seal on installation.
the volvo tool has a thin wall and a pocket so the inner protruding lip wont get crushed.
on where to buy the tools? only place I know is from a volvo dealer.
I have found its easiest to loosen,torque the carrier with the drive installed, they can be rather tight.
DO NOT forget to remove both the lock bolt on the aft end of the carrier AS WELL as the retainer all the way fwd and at the top of the carrier inside the exhaust cavity.
you wont be the first ever broke one

Lock bolt and retainer (forward inside exhaust) are both removed. Ok clear for installing the seal I need to go to a Volvo workshop. How about the tool to remove/ loose the carrier? Is it possible to make one yourself? I assume the carrier has to be unscrewed out of the lower house/exhaust?
