Hi All,

I picked up a boat with a 1993 Evenrude 115 this week. I had an inspection done befor paying for it and there was some work that needed to be done on the motor (carbs/water pump/steering)

When dropping off the boat, I asked the tech to check over the oil injection system, figuring why not get that cleaned out, tested and set up to make sure its all working right.

I asked about the oil in the tank, if it was any good since its been sitting, he said it would be fine, however that it is most likely TC W3, and the new stuff is XD30 (or something like this). He suggested we start fresh with the new version, I said go for it...whatever make the motor happy.

Whats the deal with this, does anyone have the story on the change in oil?

Thanks

evinrude says it's good for 2-stroke outboards and I believe 'em. Wonder why they aren't getting it certified?

but holy guacamole! the price! $30/gallon! no wonder he wants to get you hooked on it.

I don't want to put words in the techs mouth, however I thought he said something about the TC-W3 not being made anymore. Maybe he ment Evinrude was not going to produce it, however I am pretty sure, everyone else and thier brother will produce TC-W3. This is an Evinrude shop I am having do the service, nothing but Evinrude/Johnson, maybe this is what he meant.

What would you do, clean out the old TC-W3 and switch? I was simply concerned as the boat sat for 3-4 years, thought it might be a good idea to clean the tank/pump/lines out and get fresh, the new oil thing just threw me off.

that motor will be perfectly happy with TC-W3 oil. as long as it is certified, the Brand does not matter. Many of us here use the Walmart brand SuperTech, tc-w3 oil for years.

Johnson/Evinrude/BRP does not make ANY oil!

They slp their name one soemone else's manufactured oil.

I do not beleive you need XD 30 and even if your motor was nwe, using any other TCW3 oil wouldn't even void your warranty.

I used WM premium last year, but switched to Pennzoil Synth blend this year and was slightly cheaper to boot.

XD 30 is nothing new. Its TC-W rated and all but it?s red. If the oil in your tank isn't red then it has to be some other ?TC-W? oil.

My motor grew up on XD 30 but I changed over to Merc Premium Plus 2 years ago because it had a carbon guard in it so there was no need for additional fuel additives.

XD 50 has a carbon guard in it as well but I can get the Merc oil a couple of bucks cheaper a gallon locally.

FWIW: You can get XD30 for less than $18 a gallon in case lots
