Hello, I'm still somewhat new here have been reading around for a while and find this site very informativ,Thanks in advance!
Ok,I have a 1983 Baja 190 tc MCM260 ser#6356454 alpha 1.Took it for 1st time yesterdayand had very stiff shifting.(i did notice the cable where it goes thru transom was rubbing on driveshaft little flat spot on cable,ty wrapped out of way)Also seemed to stick in gear f and r.from my reading it seems lower shift cable replacement necessary.
also and I'm thinking unrelated I couldn't get the boat up to speed 3500+rpm wouldnt get on plane seemed like prop hub(hopefully)at low rpms seemed to go,got back to dock fine.my question is what are the tests to isolate thes problems.Again thanks in advance

Ayuh,...... I Agree Completely.....

Ayuh,......
Scribe a Line against the Prop hub,+ Try it..... If it Moves,... You need to rehub the prop...
If it Doesn't move,+ the rpms are greater than your speeds,....
You Probably need to pull the motor,+ replace the Coupler......

Re: lower shift cable?...

The coupler is attatched to the flywheel on the back of the engine. You would definitely want to rule out the prop hub first.

Your description of the prop rotation is normal.

rule out the prop first. it's much easier to get to. put yer line on it like bondo says.
as for the lack of wot. when was the last time ya had a tuneup ontoit?
there's many things that can effect ya not reaching wot. here's a list of possibles

List of possible causes of low WOT.

Engine Won't Reach Operating RPM. Check
  • Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
  • Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
  • Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve Fuel System Test
  • Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
  • Marine growth on hull and outdrive
  • Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
  • Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
  • Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive
  • Poor cylinder compression Compression Test
  • Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
  • Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
  • Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
  • Engine Overheating
  • Engine timing and ignition system operation (Full tuneup done recently)
  • Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.

Re: lower shift cable?...

I'm sorry for being a newbie but could some one please show me where to scribe this mark?per Bondos instructions??I might be a little confused as to what parts are actually what.
I did see some darkish smoke when given alittle throttle I couldn't tell if this was from exhaust.

Ayuh,.....

Remove the Prop,.....
Scribe a line across the Face, where the body of the prop meets the props Center, where the Propnut rides......
Reinstall it,+ Run it....
Then remove it again,..... Has the line Moved,..??

You're trying to see whether the prop's Body is staying insinc with the prop's Center Hub.....

Re: lower shift cable?...

I wasn't going to put the boat back in the water(it was a little bit of an experience 1st time out with this boat)is there any other way to isolate my problem(s)?As far as the shift cable I've read around a little bit and think I 'm going to do this myself.I need to print off some pages from 1 of the links posted about this matter, but how much roughly do you think a marine shop would charge?Assuming its the lower shift cable & new prop hub?I already did a full tune up(minus plug wires, they looked ok) transom rubber all new gimbal bearing, impeller all done prior to me buying boat(from somebody I trust).temp. was running around 160.
If it were the coupler would it make noise or something cause everything sounded ok just not a lot of go.
