I bought a 2001 Johnson 90 hp Oceanpro from a friend for small sum on a gamble I can repair it. I am told the engine gave good service until on a recent outing when it ran for 15 minutes before stopping. They managed to start it back up for a couple of minutes before it locked up. The shop told him the oil injection pump failed and a new powerhead was required. He said there was a hole in the cylinder but inspection shows none I can see so I think maybe there is a hole in a piston that was lost in translation. He elected to get a new motor and I have the locked up outboard. All I have done so far is take out the plugs and poured some oil in and put the plugs back in. The engine looks virtually new with the cover off. I have a good mechanical aptitude but have never been in the guts of a big outboard so I hope somebody that has been there done that can advise me on a few concerns. Is this project something a slightly above average Joe can tackle successfully with just a repair manual? Are parts available? Should I attempt a power head rebuild myself or belly up to the pump and pay for a factory reman? Lastly when I do get it running can I just mix the gas and not have to worry about the oil pump? All advise is appreciated!
