Does it need to be in gear to remove just the lower unit (89 alpha 1)? I'm looking at the Merc manual and I don't see anything about putting it in gear when dropping the lower, just says to put it in fwd when removing the whole thing. I'm only changing the impeller and gear oil at this point.

Ayuh,.....

Anytime I'm working on a Merc,.... I put it in Forward......

Necessary or Not,... It's a Good Habit, I Think......

It'll need to be in gear to put the lower back on, so might as well do it know while you are thinking about it.

You don't need it in gear to just drop the lower unit off the upper.

i think its easier to line up the shifter when you go to put it back up if you put in foward gear

Re: In gear to pull lower unit?

Sorry to threadjack but I'm having a problem that I beleive is related to this discussion. I hired a "mechanic" to replace my impeller since I was not familar with the process and the next day when we went boating the boat began to "pop out" of the forward gear into neutral regardless of the position of the throttle lever. At this point I stopped using the boat and this "mechanic" would not return my phone calls. I know for a fact the boat was in neutral during the repair and reinstallation of the drive and Im wondering if something was not lined up when the lower drive was reinstalled.

Thanks guys :D

Then don't Threadjack. If you have a question, start your own thread. It gets real wierd trying to answer a question when you don't know who is talking to who or who is answering who or is that whom????????
