1973 Mercury 1500 trim problems

Hello,

I am sure this has been answered a hundred times, and I have searched the forums but have found so many diffrent issues, that I have confused myself

The problem that I have is that the trim will only lower the motor; it has a 3 button controller, and when I push the UP only button, I hear solenoid click and motor hums at what seems to be a high speed, but it dosent move; I removed the transome saver from it and was able to lower the motor down with the power trim, but cannot get it to go back up. The system appears to have pressure, as I loosened the hex head pressure set screws on one of the pistons and it sprayed oil out, this was with the piston at max extension as the motor was lowered. I cannot find any visible leaks--would this sound more like a weak motor or solenoid sticking? I did tap on both the motor and solenoid and was able to lower the motor more--I was just going through all the buttons to see if it would move...

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I was able to take the top off the pump motor and clean the armature and free up the brushes and spray WD40 and mine started working

Hello 67SlickSS,

This was a tip given to me to find out what was wrong with mine... Find your Trim Motor Solenoid and use at least a 10 guage wire to bridge the main terminals (will post a pic) if the motor goes up, then its the Solenoid. Otherwise, its your motor.... from what I have understood from the help I got.

Matt, If the system still works as intended at the factory, the middle button trims the motor. Pushing top and middle buttons together tilts the motor.

If the motor runs when you push the middle button, but the motor doesn't move, you have either air in the system or something is really broken. BTW leave those hex bolts alone. They are not the bleed screws. The phillips screw next to the grease fitting is the down bleed screw. It sounds like you already bled the down circuit. Time to bleed the up circuit.

First fill the trim pump with oil. Originally it called for 5W-30 motor oil. See what is in there if it is red use Dextron III ATF, if it is oil colored, use the motor oil. Now remove the two bolts, 5/8 wrench for the top bolt, 3/4 for the bottom bolt, that hold the trim cylinder in its bracket and to the motor. Turn the cylinder over so the hose connections face up. Upen the bleed screw next to the hose connections and run the trim pump in the up direction, until no more air comes out. Repeat with the other cylinder. They are now bled.
