Trim Gauge Not Functioning

I found literature on how to check this out/troubleshoot the sensor and the gauge, unfortunately, I don't know where the trim potentiometer is. Am I correct in assuming that it's what I have pictured? There's one on each side of my 898 (seems weird you'd need two...but I don't know since I'm new to I/O's and trim gauges). I found that there's broken/frayed wires going into the one on the right side. Would this be a possible location for failure? I wouldn't even know how to get at this thing to repair the wires, however. Can you take it out? Any ideas? Thanks!

The port one is the trim limit and the starboard one is the trim position (guage)

You have to pull remove the drive and bellhousing to reach the fiting that holds the wire in were they pass through the transome

So that makes sense why my gauge is not working(?). Starboard is right, right? :D Could I jumper it to see if the gauge works? Is that a major maintenance? I can see it and get my fingers on the broken wire, but to replace it might be impossible. Could I crimp something to fix? How much work would it take to remove the drive and bell housing? That sucks you can't just remove that potentiometer to get at the wires because they're honestly just right behind it. That removal sounds really intricate and like a lot of work.

Yeah they're for sure broken right on the back side. That really looks like quite a bit of work just to do a wire. Seems so simple and easily pinpointed. In all honesty, how long would something like that take you? Or how much would it cost to get it done? Would you need to get a whole new sender or could you just splice out the bad portion of wire? I'll probably need to build up a bit of courage and get some new tools before I take that on.

From your post:
"If there broken that is it as splicing underwater causes all kinds of stray current eat my drive issues "

Tough time following that? Does that mean, don't splice?
