Don't panic, not everyone read that thread

The impeller is the raw water pump inside the outdrive. It has an impeller in it that pumps the cooling water into the engine. The engine circulating pump (aka water pump by the automotive types) does nothing more than circulate the water in the engine when the thermostat opens. It can not PUMP water from outside the boat into the engine. That is the job of the raw water pump.
Now, if it runs without water, it will be damaged and will need to be replaced.
More coming. Have to talk to the phone right now.

Well see there. I knew there was a water pump in the drive. I just didn't know that it went by the name of impeller. So by running the boat without water to dry the cylinders and plugs I ruined the impeller. That blows. But I saved the engine.

The impeller is only 1 part of the raw water pump in the outdrive. Do you have the OEM service manual (Clymers and Seloc don't count).

Clymer
No wonder you are having so many problems.
You need OEM manuals ONLY.
I can help you with the drive manual, It's online and free. Here is the link. Just go to outline and click on the section you want to look at. Trust me, section 3B will tell you about the impeller, there is also a section on removal and installation of the drive.

For your engine, you need book 24 (not online).

WOW. There is a whole lot to the drive unit. Something I know nothing about. Think I might leave that to the mechanic.

Yea, there are more to boats than a lot of people think there is. Look at it this way. Impeller changes are easy and cheap and should be done about every 3 or 4 years on a Gen II for no other reason that peace of mind when you go out. You know you won't be overheating because of an old impeller.

just asking, if you don't know what it is, how do you know it needs to be changed?

Read the reference thread in the original post, then you will understand why.
