Re: In the market for a new string trimmer

Interesting to note, I was in Costco the other day and saw a string edger with a Honda 4 cylcle engine on it. It looked to be the about same size and weight of a typical two cycle.

Unfortunately I do not remember the price but if I was in the market for a new unit, I might be inclined to look into it further.

Couple years ago I needed to upgrade from an electric to a gas trimmer.

Best? 1) Shindaiwa 2) Stihl 3) Echo

But, for the price difference, I got a Homelite. Probably not as good, probably won't last as long, but for the dozen or two times I'll use it, I just couldn't justify the extra $$.

All depends on just how much you'll use it.

Now for a blower, I went with the best professional-grade I could get (Shindaiwa) since it get used several hours a day for 8 weeks September - November, plus more in the spring at our cottage.

Stihl without a doubt. Ours starts perfectly, and will run till the cows come home (we don't have any cows). The straight shaft is definitely a must. With the 20 somethin' tooth blade they offer, you can cut some unbelievable stuff. We regularly cut 2 inch thick boxwood stalks with with that, as well as routine weedeating/edging on the 3 yards I do. Bigger than 2 inches, and we pull out the 18 inch Stihl chainsaw, which has eaten 30 inch trees numerous times without a problem.

Thanks everyone. I bought the Echo. The Stihl had an extra safety switch that I thought might be a pain and the salesperson said they were both great machines but preferred using the Echo. I didn't really need any convincing to go with the Echo so I did. I also ordered an Echo pump sprayer while I was there as it was only $40 and has the same 5 year warranty.

Good choice. I have an Echo weed eater also. Its been so reliable that I went and bought an Echo leaf blower too.
