converting a 3 wire alt to a single wire alt

I have a 1986 searay with a 350. current alt is dead.It currently uses 2 wires that plug into it and when heavy wire that goes to the starter. I can i replace it with a single wire alternator? Thats a pretty awesome price.....for 105 amps!

Isnt this a 2 wire plug in ( shown with a cap ) over the 2 wire plug and the 1 BAT wire that connects to the nut on the rear of the altanator? 3 wire? Unless that black cap is not a cover plug and there are no terminals in there. Then it wont work for you.

it claims to be a 1 wire self excited alternator. Checked my old alt tonight i have battery voltage at all 3 wires. No matter how fast i run the motor and how much draw i create the heavy wire at the alt just reads whatever the batteries are. At idle with no electrical load it shows 12.01 volts at 2000 rpms with the frig turned on it shows 10.03 volts

Just run a new wire to the positive terminal on the battery. All better!

Right. Just get the new alternator, run a wire to the positive terminal, hook it up, it should work fine.

I bought that same alternator from that same seller last year. I'd fought alternator battles on my '69 160 for a couple years before that. Did the switch from 3 wire to this 1 wire and it worked like a dream last season.
