i am haveing trouble with my boat. i am not getting any spark. my boat is a 2000 bayliner capri, it has a 305 gm merc stern drive motor. i have put on a new dis cap , rotor and plugs. i cant get sparks from any of the plug wires going to the motor although i can get a spark from the coil wire going into the middle of the dis. could this be a a dis. censor prob or an icm prob and if so how can i check these? pls help its already 100 degrees in bakersfield and im not on the water!!!

I had that problem and had to replace the pickup coil in the distributor. Fixed the problem.

Ayuh,......

I believe the fact that you're getting fire into the top of the Dist, cap says that those pieces Are working......
In other words,...
The Problem is Downstream from There,.....
Dist.cap, Rotor, Wires, or Plugs......

Disregard the information I gave above, It's for a 3.0L, not a 305 ????

What ignition system do you actually have on your engine? Better yet, what is the Mercruiser SN of your engine?

thanks for the help my sn is 0L645993.... although the info was for a diff engine i did fing out that theres a motion sensor in the dis. it said that i should have like 110 ohms or somewhere in there. i took the wires off the harness and check the res. i had no ohms could that be a prob. the motion censor is the only 2 #14awg wires comeing from the dis. right?

Don't even think about trying to troubleshoot a Thunderbolt ignition system using a Delco EST troubleshooting chart. They have absolutely nothing in common, and that is what gets DIYers into a lot of trouble. Assuming things may be the same.
You have a Thunderbolt V ignition system. Here is the chart for troubleshooting.

I beleive the pick-up coil is the thing that the two wires connect to in the distributor. If not it might be the ignition module. I can't remember what it was called when I bought it. Never the less that is what I replaced and that fixed my problem.
