Ok, so here is the siutation. I just purchased a new t-stat today. the old one was the original from 1996, so i figured it was about time to replace. WELLL it want pee!!! I verifiyed that the thermostat worked by putting it in water under the stove and it opens up, but want open up with my motor (no evidence of it!) I even verifyed that it was the right t-stat and it matched the one i took off. I AM REALLY CONFUSED!! I am putting it in right and everthing! I ran the boat for 3 minutes with no pee coming out after replacing it, so i gave the new t-stat a chance, but it simply isnt working right in my opinion??? I even took it out to verify that my circulatory system was pumping water correctly, and the engine peed fine without a thermostat. It says on it 130, im guessing that is the temp at which it opens..........Also, the old t-stat would pee after about 10sec. of operation. can somebody please help me out, i am starting to get really pissed over all of this!!! The engine i have is a 75hp 96' modle:confused::mad::confused:

I am NOT sure but......It may be that the motor only runs the tattle-tale when the thermostat has opened when the motor has warmed up. If your in some pretty cold water that may take a little while. I'm not saying run it till she burns up waiting for it to pump, but give it a little bit while you feel the cylinders for heat, obviously shutting it down if it's getting hot. my friend's merc would do that (not pump out the indicator until warm--2000 150hp)
This is just a guess, hopefully you'll get someone knowledgeable to answer your question.

check the year (or the horsepower); there hasn't been a 75hp johnnyrude since 1988.

Closed thermostat won't preventing it from peeing.

Dirt dauber (or any other insect) crawling up in the indicator nipple might, though. get a thin wire & clean it out.

If the indicator hose is clear, you need to get in there and inspect your water pump.

Why make something complicated when it doesn't need to be? If the old t-stat is working fine, put it back in and go boating!

No the old t-stat stopped working! it ceased up! Also, i do not have any dirt dobber nest or anything in my system. Because i can run the motor without the t-stat and it pees fine!!! Changed my impellor last week! Did not change the gaskets under it though. But it shouldnt matter bc it pees fine without the t-stat in it. The problem is getting it to pee with the t-stat in!

Fishhard
I have the same problem with my 86 225.
With the new stats in it takes to long to pee for me to be
comfortable letting it run. With the stats out the water comes out the telltale.
I installed a new impeller and housing this year and even dropped the lower unit and stuck a hose on the water pickup tube. Water came out with no problem.

Are you running it on muffs?

I am no expert, take me with a grain of salt, but I'd bet you need to put the engine in water to get an accurate read on the tell-tale.

I hear ya, but what amazes me is if i take the thermostat out the engine pees fine (ON MUFFS)!! When the thermostat is put back in NO PEE!!! Same thermosat, same temp. rating, everything is the same as the old one!Again, i know it works bc i tested it in a pan of water! i would say that this is about the most confused that i have EVER been dealing with this outboard!

You may be airlocked behind the thermostat, try an old auto trick.
1) Manually open the thermostat and prop it open with a Bayer Aspirin
2) Install it as you normally would, this allows water to circulate before getting up to temp
3) The aspiring will disolve and get peed out.
Out side of that I have no idea

Is it 75hp, or is it 1996? Can't be both.

Check your bypass valve(s)

Re: I am on my last string with this engine...HELP ME OUT!!

Thanks, Jtexas! Now something i forgot to mention was how this all started. When i was boating saturday, due to high water, duckweed was EVERWHERE. I had to practically run my boat in straight duckweed most of the day. About half way through i noticed that my talltale wasnt peeing anymore. So i disasembled the thermostate housing and she went to peeing after i took the t-stat out. Then stopped about 1hr of more riding. So i figured my water pump was going bad or i was getting duckweed clogging my system. So i went home and changed out the impellor, and left the thermosate out. Took the boat back out the next day, and ran it for about 3 more hours with no problems pee'n. Well i did some research and found out that i needed to put back in the t-stat to insure proper engine proformace. So, i went and purchased a new t-stat. And that is where i am now. Engine only pees when i have no thermostat in it! Hope this helps yall solve my problem a little better! Thanks for everybody pitching in on advice with my issue, it is well appriciated!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Re: I am on my last string with this engine...HELP ME OUT!!

Ok, i just talked to a mechanic and he told me what the problem probably is, however, i honestly trust yall more than my machanic. So please tell me if he sounds right by this! He said that running it on muffs isnt the correct way to test the thermostat bc the water isnt getting hot enough to open the t-stat. He said that i would have to back the boat down in water to get an accurate test on my t-stat? But can i just submerge it into a garbage can instead and get the same results?? The landing from my house is 2hrs away and i really want to make sure that my t-stat is working properly b4 i drive way down there to waste money for it to not work properly!! Whats yalls opinion??

Re: I am on my last string with this engine...HELP ME OUT!!

I believe what he's saying about the motor doesn't always heat up enough to open the stats while running on the muffs - but I still don't know what kind of motor you have.

Since you have only one thermostat, I'll assume it's a 3- or 2-cylinder whatever, in which case, it ought to be peeing regardless of the thermostat. Study the water passage diagram in your manual, you'll see why I keep saying that. If I'm wrong, you'll have wasted a few minutes; if I'm right, you can thank me later. ;)

In addition to the thermostat, there's also a pressure relief valve in there. If that valve is blocked or partially blocked, the motor *will* overheat at high speed regardless of pee stream strength. And, if water in the water jacket starts boiling, steam can block the telltale.

To test your thermostat:
Put it in a pot of water on the stove with a kitchen thermometer, turn the heat up high and observe. If it opens at 130?F it's good. If it doesn't, it's bad.

Re: I am on my last string with this engine...HELP ME OUT!!

Wanna give an update on my t-stat. I got home and did as suggested. i took some asprin an pried it open to see if any air was gettin to it. Well it peed flawlessly until the asprin melted, then drippled, then stopped! So agian, i took the t-stat out and it peed flawlessly until i killed it! So pretty much it will pee without a thermostat and want pee with one (all these test were ran on muffs).....And i waited with the t-stat in for about 3min and NO PEE! I am soooooooooooooooooooo lost right now it aint even funny!!! I even backflushed to verify that there wasnt anything stuck in the system, all was fine! And like i stated earlier, all this happend after i ran through a BUNCH of duckweed! I need some more ideas to try! Thanks for all who is helping!! But i need some more help!!!
