Selector Gear 1978 Model 200 20 Hp

Hi I Have A 78 Model 200 2ohp . I Have Use It For A Few Years And Decided To Clean Up The Carb And Found My Selector Gear That Atatches To The Vertical Shaft Assy. Had Part Of It Broken Off That Bolts To The Follower . It Selects Gears Do I Even Need To Fix It ? What Does The Follower Do Mabey Not Much Since It Is What's Not Connected ? Any Help?
