I have a 89 johnson 9.9. model is j10ECES. On the carb there are 2 springs on the same shaft that the choke is on. the springs are under the choke control lever and can be seen when you take that off. The springs control the choke and in conjunction with the choke lever make the choke open or close. the motor wont start easily when cold. I noticed that one of those springs isnt attached. It is the thinner of the two springs and it has a 90 degree hook on one end and is straight on the other.. I cant find a manual anywhere that tells me where this spring is supposed to attach. Is there anyone that can tell me where and how this spring is supposed to attach to the carb. Because it isnt attached the carb doesnt close all the way when the choke lever is pulled out?

Can anyone help?

Re: 1989 9.9 johnson carberator spring

Thanks a lot!
Unfortunately I have the parts diagram already and its not all that helpful. It is the spring number 14 in the parts diagram that I can not figure out how to install and Ive yet to find a manual with instructions.
I will check the forum for an answer from time to time.
Thanks again!

That spring hooks over the top of the lever. Kind of the opposite way the other spring does. Hrm . . . I should have a spare carb like that someplace. I'll try and send you a pm with a picture sometime in the next day or so.

Thank you so much! This was helpful.
From what you told me now I have maybe confirmed that the hook end goes over the lever and in contact with part number 24 from the parts diagram. That is where I thought it went because it helps to close the choke when you pull the choke knob out. But where does the other straight end of the spring go? So yes, A picture would be very helpful.
Ill check back...
Thanks again!

The straight end is going to rest against the carb body.

Turn the spring clockwise until the straight edge rests up against something. Then turn the spring clockwise some more until the hooked end can be placed over the lever.

Re: 1989 9.9 johnson carberator spring

I found someone on the internet that sent me a picture. Just in case someone reads this later I wanted to make sure it was documented.

The hook end goes over the lever and is in contact with part number 24 from the parts diagram. The straight end then wraps around (tightening the spring) until it rests on part number 19 on the diagram. The larger spring is already attached very close to that location on part 19 for a reference point.

My only concern is how did that sping come off and will it happen again? I did put some silicone lubricant on it.

The motor started immediately when cold in a short test and Ill be able to hit the water for a real test this weekend!
I think the problem is solved..

Thanks so much for you help everyone!
