I have a 1992 Sea Ray 180, with a MerCruiser 4.3 V6 Alpha One engine. This is my first boat. I took it out today for the first time, I have a couple questions. My speedometer is not working. I see this little propeller thing attached to my boat but the other end of cable is not connected to anything. I am guessing this is the thing that measures the speed, but i have no idea where to connect the other end. I included pictures of the cable, and the speedometer.

Another question, when i shift from neutral to forward am i supposed to hear the
"clicking sound" or shift it fast so as to hear a solid click?

- Thanks in advance.

Can't help with the speedo issue, but as far as shifting goes, you should shift quickly, not slowly. There should be no click, click, click, thunk. Just thunk. And don't abuse it by "jamming" it into gear, or shifting without the motor running. If you need to shift whith the boat on the trailer and motor off, have someone spin the prop by hand to get the dogs to engage. There are no clutches/synchros in boat gear cases. Just simple connectors called "dogs". So shift quick and firm, not slow and easy.

Re: Speedometer Problem

Your issue with the speedo has nothing to do with the paddle wheel, that was connected to a sonar unit that was taken off the boat before you bought it. The black hose coming out of the center of the speedo hooks up to either a connection on the lower unit or a pointed plastic piece mounted on the stern. If you look on the front of your lower unit you should see a small hole. Water pressure against this hole moves the needle on the speedo. If this hole is plugged the speedo doesn't work. See if you can trace the hoe and figure out if its loose, plugged etc.
