Prop quits under load

I have a 1970 Evinrude, 100 hp outboard. First time out with it today and as long as I kept it at a low rpm, all went well. But as soon as I gave it the gas, even moderately I could hear the engine come out from being under load and the prop would barely spin.... not forward or reverse. Even if I lowered the speed.

But, if I turn off the engine and wait a few minutes and restart, then it worked great in low rpms again. I could travel the globe... but only at about 5 mph.

This boat was my uncles and he passed away 5 years ago. it has sat since then.

Sounds like a spun hub. On the back of the prop put 2 marks opposite each other. one on the inner hub and one on the outer. Now try it again. Then recheck the marks and see if they are still lined up. If not have the prop re-hubbed.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Could you elaborate a bit more on this problem and the remedy? I would greatly appreciate it. I would like to get it apart and look at it tomorrow early morning.

Although I do not have specific knowledge of outboards, I am rather competent and have a full range of tools at my disposal.

OK, I did a bit of research on spun hubs and it sopunds like that is exactly what my problem is. I also think I have a solid understanding of the problem and remedy.

Thanks again.

btw, are there any temporary remedies to allow me to get it on the water tomorrow? Being a sunday and holiday weekend and all, I doubt I'll be able to get it fixed until next week.

borrow or buy a prop, there is not fixing it yourself. one of the reason to have a spare in the boat.
