1991 Johnson 70, I think

Hello. Great forum here and I hope somebody can help me out. I'm a novice at the outboard thing but I think I just bought a remanufactured 1991 Johnson 70 hp outboard. The model number suggests it's a 60hp. I paid for a 70. Is there a chance I actually have a 70 despite the model number.

Also, my old motor was not oil injected. I see that there is an oil connection on the motor. Can I just get by with 50:1 mix without using the oil line?

Finally, the control box has a lever on it. I've never dealt with the lever. I had the button on the handle. What is the purpose of the lever. I just ordered the manual.

Thanks in advance.

Please post model # and maybe a pic and Im pretty sure we can help you figure this out. You can run premix, but you will need to cap the oil inlet line, and unhook the wiring from the vro pump. Im sure others will chime in with more details.
The lever is a fast start feature available on most controlls. It allows you to increase the speed of the motor while not in gear, Just pull it up when starting your motor, and push it back down when she starts.

Thanks Master. The Model Number is J60ELEIB. I know by model number it should be a 60 but can they change the hp when they remanufacture it? I paid a couple hundred more because they say it is a 70. Stickers say 70.

Also, it is easy to disconnect the VRO? I assume they did it when the installed it because my boat obviously isn't equipped for oil injection. They told me just to run 50:1.

You have the same motor as me. I think the only difference between the 60 and 70 were maybe bigger carbs or something. I honestly dont know...but we have the same model number.

The model number on the engine indicates the hp that shipped from the factory. It would be 60. The only difference is the carbs. The 70 carbs have slightly larger throats. You will find little difference between the two, probably about 200-250 rpm at top end. You need to check the part numbers on the carbs to see just which ones are on the engine to be sure.

Thanks for the help. I'm not real experienced with outboards but I'm interested in learning a bit about my "new" motor.
