What engine/outdrive? If its an Alpha 1, check especially the lower shift cable and the shift interrupt switch.

Have you removed and reinstalled the drive lately? is it real stiff when you shift? I had similar issues when I was installing my lower and it popped out of gear. If it was not removed lately than I would lean towards a shift cable.

geiger - we don't know what you have, so any guesses we give are just that guesses(and uneducated ones at that).

With that said, you have described the classic "stretched lower shift cable" IF you have an alpha and not a bravo, or volvo, or , OMC(which could have a bad ESA), or Yamaha, or......

I'll bet that your 898 does not have a Gen II on it.....unless someone has cobbled it on.

Post serial number of the drive AND engine.

Yeah, '95 and GenII jive, but that 898 is out of line by more than a decade.

Ayuh,....

But with Either of the Alphas,.....

I'd still be lookin' at the Shift Cable,+ Switch.....

'ell,...... Even if it's an old Mod.1, which would have been behind a 898,....
It's Still the same Answer.........;)

Re: hard getting into neutral while in the water!!!

Im not an expert but i just went through the same situation. I had the shift cable changed out by a Mercruiser Service center because of the same problem and 1500 dollars later i put it into the water and the same thing happen. I had no neutral when in the water and was hard to shift. I took it back and they refused to correct the original problem. I took out the book and went to work on it my self and found that the lower shift cable was installed wrong. It had a 90 degree bend at the shift plate and the shift cables were not adjusted properly. Try to illiminate any kinks in the shift cables and correctly adjust the cables first and adjust the interupt switch. Then i would look into changing out the lower shift cable. It may save you some money.
