I was prepping my motor for the season and running with the cowl off and noticed a black small fuel line going from the lower part of the head on the right side to the upper part of the head broken in half. I think it is part of the back draft system but cant find it in my merc manual. Can anyone tell me what it is for and can I run with it plugged? The motor running at idle on muffs does not seem to mind that it is not connected but it is a fire hazord if it is not hooked up. 1976 merc 1500

Jet, That line pumps any fuel/oil that settles in the lower main bearing to the upper main bearing. It should be replaced. You might remove both one way valves and see that they are clean and functional.

Where in the merc shop manual does it talk about this line? I have spent some time looking for this. Is it only in an illistarated parts breakdown? Also is that rubber tubing sold be the foot or is it by a specific part number. Does iboats have such a part? Thank you for the fast response.

Jet, The recirculating line should be mentioned in the service manual. Perhaps in the powerhead section. Merc has a part number for the tube, but a dealer may not carry it at this time. You can pick up some correct size vacuum tube at a local autoparts store.

If you really want the part number look it up at the dougrussell.com or crowleymarine.com web sites.
