ok, I've got a 1990 thundercraft runabout with a mercury M90 oil injected engine on it. It was a 100% working boat when I bought it and had no problems with it several times taking it out until one day my bilge pump crapped out on me in rough water and the boat went down lol. (salt water)

It was under about 15 minutes before a parasailing boat hooked on to it and pulled it up and we got it floating again. I got it home and emptied everything. There was 3 cups of water in the starter alone lol. Anyway, we drained the gas tank and the fuel bowls as well and put fresh gas in and got it running again and it has been cranked and run regularly the past year while I've gotten other projects done until I could get back on this one.

We even took it out again last year and it did pretty good overall. Well, now I've got some setting up problems I need to fix.

How do I go about finding out the exact model number of the engine so I can start parts hunting for it?? I can get the serial number later if needed for identification but cant find an exact model number anywhere on the engine??

I want to get the correct repair manual, etc for this engine so I'm pretty sure that is definitely needed.

I know at minimum I need to replace the water pump. I also have a little diode on the right side of the engine that smokes when the engine is running (cant be good). The steering is locked up and I think while we were trying to free it up that I may have damaged the steering cables so I'll be probably needing replacements. Also, whenever we put it in gear, the choke lever goes up as well and we cant find any frozen linkage on the engine itself so I'm thinking either the control box is the problem or the cable is the problem.

I'm going to completely rewire the boat anyway so that's not too much of an issue.

When I get home tonight I'll get whatever numbers you guys need if you tell me about where they are located. I'll also take a pic of the diode thing I'm talking about for identification purposes so I can get that replaced as well.

ok, here's a pic of the serial number plate as well as the part I was talking about earlier that smokes after the engine has been running a little while. It's located under the three coil packs.

Your motor is a 1988 model. The part in question is your rectifier which needs to be replaced. It probably failed due to all the corrosion I see. ALL your connections need to be very clean and tight.

Re: new guy with lots of questions

cool thanks! so which repair manual should I look for?? just a standard 2stroke mercury outboard that covers this and other years?? Is there any way to tell if there were other 90hp mercury motors in this year range which might have different parts?? I dont want to go around saying I have an 88 90hp mercury engine and then the guy gives me the wrong water pump impellor or something.

Doesn't make any difference. Parts are by engine size and serial number range. Mercury can take just the serial number, and tell you exactly what engine you have, but it won't be by year, it'll be by size and features. You can usually figure out the year from that.

Mercury parts express used to do that well, but the dot com kids have managed to hose up that site pretty well. mercruiserparts.com, and usboatsupply.com both have parts systems that work pretty well and cover your motor.

Call mercury and order your maintenance manual.

The rectifier is toast. It got toasted because the connections to it are dirty and overheated. With connections cleaned well, a new one will be fine. In this case, CDI is much better than mercury for the part.

hope it helps

anyone know what kind of gauge wire I need to use when I replace wires on the engine?? the ones on the rectifier look to be about 8 gauge or 10 gauge but I'm wondering if they have to be a special marine grade wire or something that's shielded???

Re: new guy with lots of questions

I guess my hardest part is getting used to the interchange system with boat parts. I'm so used to ford interchange that this is weird to understand with serial #'s and such.

basically, based on my serial number above...would the following water pump impeller kit fit my engine?

90 HP 3 Cyl. A996142-UP

I'm thinking it does as mine is a 90hp engine and it's a 3 cylinder 2stroke and it starts with OB but who knows??

Impeller would be the one listed for B110054-C221999 part no. 18-3213. Unfortunately it looks like iboats is out of stock.

Re: new guy with lots of questions

ok, explain to me how you were able to figure that out?? I need help with cross referencing parts with boat motors now lol.

how does my serial number tie into that interchange range??

wait, I think I figured it out. I ignore the first digit which is the O and go with the rest of the serial number which is B275426 which falls in that range correct??

I'm assuming on an inboard engine it would start with "I"?? also, if this is true then that means the one I posted up above would work since it says it starts with A and goes on up...correct??

or am I ASSuming too much??

That is correct, you drop the 0. Since your serial no falls within the other range, you would use that. I would imagine that the A and up stops at the start of the range yours is in. They just don't tell you that.

ahhh well thats nice. thanks for the info, I guess I'll stick with serial number ranges then instead of going with +up type listings lol.

here's another question. when people JUST list a part number...which replaces...yet another part number. how can I tell from that part number if it fits my engine?? is there a part # interchange as well or how do you tell what part #'s fit your engine without having a massive serial#/part# reference book which I can only imagine is super expensive....

Re: new guy with lots of questions

I sort of back into it. For instance, If I want to know if a stator I find in eBay will fit my engine, I look up my number, and the possible donor number, and see if they both can be replaced by the same CDI stator.

Also, some parts systems will list the original part numbers and the sequence of substitutions as they are improved (cheaper vendors found) over the years.

hope it helps
