IS the craburetor choke valve supposed to stay open always? It's a 1988 4.3l gm merc. alpha 1

Mine is always open and was wondering if that is the reason I an getting smoke out of the breather tubes and carburator at high rpm's.

If not is there a way to adjust it?
thanks

The only time the choke plate should be closed is on cold starts. If it is standing perfectly vertical on a warm engine that's normal. Smoke should not come out of the carb at any time with the engine running although you might see a little whiff after you shut it off.

Sounds like you have blow by. Do a compression check and let us know the results.Jerry

It will make cold starts harder, but won't do any harm.....
See what is making the linkage stiff by moving it up & down, it might just need some lube....;)
