Mercruiser 140 float and accelerator pump settings

Hi there. I have a mercruiser 140 with a mercarb and the accelerator pump doesn't seem to be working properly. The only way the engine will start is with a shot of starter fluid then it runs fine but I notice that the accelerator pump dosent squirt gas into the carb only intermittently, when I disconnect the throttle cable and manually pump it everyonce and while it will squirt a weak stream but other times just bubbles. when I do get the engine going when I advance the throttle there is a good bogging and very noticeable when on the water and trying to accelerate, almost stalls and have to back off throttle and pump it a few times to keep it going. I need to know how the pump works exactly. does the gas in the bowl need to be high enough to spill over into the cylinder that the pump slides up and down, there is a notch on the side so this would seem so. I tested the pump to make sure it works by filling the cylinder with gas then replacing the top of the carb and manually pumping the pump, a nice stream of gas squirts out from both sides so I know there isn't blockage. But when I reatach the top of the carb and the fuel line, get the engine going with starter fluid, shut it off again and then test the pump there isnt a squirt of gas with the bowl full, explaining why the engine wont start without starter fluid, does start right off without starter fluid when the engine is hot and has just been running. So is the float setting too low not allowing gas to enter the cylinder that houses the accelerator pump or is the setting of the accelerator pump wrong or could it be possible that the pump is the incorrect length. This is a new pump and I completely rebuilt the carb so everything is new. When I went to set the settings for float and pump from the specs given in the kit there wasn't a reference to my carb on the sheet. I took the carb to a dealer and they ordered a sierra rebuild kit 18-7097 so I assume is was the correct one. Since playing around with this, the pump became stuck and the rubber skirt tore so I have since ordered a new kit that is a mercarb kit number 804845. My questions are how do I set the pump and the float properly? and is the float measured when open or closed and how is the distance measured as far as what reference points are used when measuring for both the float and the pump. Carb is 1389-9350

Thanks

That information is in the OEM service manual, what year engine is it?

Thanks for the download. I set everything according to spec and it seems to run great now in the driveway. Haven't taken in out on the water yet to give it the full test but will be this weekend.

Thanks again

You still need to adjust the idle mixture with the engine running. The setting in the book is only a basic setting to get it running. From there you must set it for your particular engine. You will also have to adjust the idle speed.

Sorry to hijack the thread,... but ...

Don,

Do you have a manual link for a 1972 Mercruiser 140?

Thanks

Hi

How do I set the Idle mixture properly. I have it set to the spec just to get it started.

Also,

I seem to have a problem at top end the engine completely falters as though it will stall and will only continue to run when I back off the throttle. It's as if the bowl is completely running out of fuel. I have set the drop and the level to the specs in the rebuild kit so I know those are correct.

Update:

After all my efforts and carb rebuilds and setting everything to spec I decided to check the paper fuel filter on top of the fuel pump and found it completely gunked up with white goo. I replaced the filter and immediately put a inline fuel water separator upstream of pump. The boat ran great the rest of the season with a slight issue with idling. Cant get it to run consistently at same idle, sometime it's high sometimes it's low after I power down. Could just be a throttle issue but haven't gotten it out for the Spring yet.
