I have a 98 130, it started the other day would not go above 4300rpm. Motor would cough and sputter/cut in and out when at this rpm but as soon as I dropped it down to 3000-3500 it would smooth out. I continued to run her thinking its bad gas and it may work it self out. It now will not run over 3000rpm and will not plane out. I have done test to the motor and the left side two cylinders are not running. I have done a compression test good 140ish on 3 and 150 on the other. I have spark on all 4, The motor is running only on the right two cyliners. I have taken the carb cover off, squeezed the bulb no difference, I have sprayed fuel into the carbs with not much of a difference. I have drained the carb bowls and primed the bulb letting fuel flow out of them. It seems to not be firing. I have just recently replaced the fuel/water sep filter and plugs. The plugs were changed right before the problems started, fuel water filter just after. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Motor was rebuilt, before I purchased the boat.

take the carbs off, carefully clean all passages, carefully check the fuel pump diaphram. your describing a lean running condition, keep running it like that and you will post about bad compresion in a cylinder.

If cleaning the carbs is not something you?ve done before or if you don?t feel comfortable doing it please take it to a reputable repair shop that services Yamaha?s and have them do it. I would hate to hear that you?ve lost a power head because of a mistake. Its worth the money believe me. This time of year I replace lots of power heads because costumers try to save a little and clean them themselves.

Re: 98 Yamaha 130 motor issues

thanks guys I'll be reinstalling the carbs in the morn. If the problem is still their, I may try the CDI (powerpack) borrow it from a friends 115. I'll look into the fuel pump but when I pump the bulb the motor does not change. If I do not find the problem this weekend it will be in the shop.
Thanks,
robert

Re: 98 Yamaha 130 motor issues

yep. I hit another monkey just yesterday, 0 PSI on #1.
customer said it was running poor but he had to go fish anyway.
estimate is 2700 to repair the damage caused by bad gas/clogged carbs.
Owell, it keeps my horse well fed anyway :)
always keep in mind, on a carbed 2 stroke EVERYTHING that passes the carb has to aide in lubricating the reciprocating assy. bad gas can varnish the piston skirt, piston to cylinder wall clearence is about .001" the average human hair is .003" doesnt take long and there is no clearence. thats when very bad things happen

People are funny. I can?t tell you how many costumers ive told they need their carbs cleaned and they run them anyway. I swear they think your trying to screw them not help them. I bet I do ten free carb jobs a year because they really just don?t have the money.

I reinstalled the carbs, I now have better bulb pressure. I borrowed a friends CDI unit and that was my problem! If anyone has a good used unit for a 98 130/115 let me know I would appreciate it.

Re: 98 Yamaha 130 motor issues

I put in another CDI unit and I am having the same problems. The motor runs a little smoother but is not strong. It's hard to get on plane, at about 2500 rpms, once it planes out it will get up to 4300 rpms. Starts no problem, I'm done plan on taking it to the shop on monday.
