Need some advice, 1988 Cadorette 166 has a crack on the transom right side of the stern drive about 30" long diaganol. It appears water got in through a clamp hole froze during winter storage and caused the fiberglass to separate from the wood behind and cracked it right through. No damage to the wood, just the exterior. Need some advice as to the best way to repair this myself, a local body shop quoted me $1000. Thanks

Re: Fiberglass repair

This will probably need to get moved to the boat building and restoration area.

Probably there's more of a problem than you think. Water getting to the wood will cause rot, and in fact there's probably rotten wood in there. You can epoxy the glass back to the wood to re-attach, but that will be a temporary repair.

You need to check the wood for signs of rot and water, then if found replace the wood and glass to have a sound transom.

Re: Fiberglass repair

Thanks, I am new to this site, how do I move it to the other area? Also I have check with a screwdriver all along the crack and it all seems very solid. It just happened over the winter. Another source suggested I cut out the section around the crack, sand all the edges smooth and exoxy back in place. That I understand. What comes next. Fiberglass, sand and gelcoat?

Re: Fiberglass repair

Don't worry about moving it - the mods will in time. Do a search ( look at the top of this header ) about fiberglass repair. You will get tired of reading.
Also there are several websites along with You Tube that has FG repair answers. Go for it !!!! :D
