evenrude 25 not opening up

Hey i have a 75 model johnson 25hp and it is doing the same thing.Put new plugs rebuilt card checked fuel sys. and just put the plugs against head to see if there was spark ect still fooled about it. Runs like a champ idle low end just at full turn on tiller feels like it is not hitting high rpms just like it is running half the speed spark problem??. What am i doing wrong about to git rid of for another if i cant get running right but dont want to please any help would be great Dustin

Did you clean the high speed jets in the bottom of the float bowl?

Pull drain on float bowl, use a long skinny screw driver to get them out and run a stripped stranded copper wire through it and reinstall, if that doesn't do it repost and we will go from there.

yeah i used 3 cans of carb cleaner but i was at a friends cabin with limited tools and could not pull the high speed jet but put the carb cleaner nozzle right in the jet and blew it out and it seemed to flow good but i will go out right now pull it back off and do what you said just to clear that off the check list just for reference carb was spotless
at wide open throttle it runs as if i had if half open

Assuming the throttle is actually opening wide open, it probably is running half speed because it is running on one cylinder. Checking spark across the plugs is an inadequate spark test. They need to jump at least a 1/4" spark gap.

I suggest you remove and ground one spark plug lead and see how it runs. Then do the same with the other lead. It probably won't make any difference in one case and won't run at all in the other case. The spark plug / cylinder that makes no difference when connected is the good one.

latest update high speed jet looks great trying to take apart during yard sale lol but looks good as far a checking spark we kinda did what you said last week at the river we un did one spark plug wire started it ran it then turned it off and pluged that one back in then unplugged the other could not tell a diff but might have not done it right you tell me do i need to try doing it while it is running dont want to get shocked but if thats how i need to do it i will yes it is opening up all the way

Man, I HATE getting shocked!! No, unplug and ground it when not running, then start it and see if it made a difference. But you indicate that's the way you did it and there was no difference, so both cylinders are firing.

well i didnt ground out the plug wire i just took the boot off the spark plug man i am fooled i thank everyone for their input need a few more ideas that might be the reason i think its not a fuel issue i think i crossed that out has to be something

well i pulled the fly wheel lots of metal shavings but just ordered the tune up kit 2 new coils maybe this might do something???

If there's lots of metal shavings I bet your coil was out of adjustment and was rubbing agains the magnet in the flywheel. Look at the edges of the coil laminations and the flywheel magnet and see if that's the case. Also, check your magnet to be sure it's still nice and strong. If that's all correct, you should be in business with the new coils and such. Just make sure you put the coil edge flush with the little step on the coil mounting boss so it won't rub the magnet.

i will tell ya it sounds like you are looking at my motor with me lol it is exactly like you say the coil mount has been rubbing the flywheel or visa versa .i am in the process of cleaning every thing under there and now waiting on parts.can any one tell me a little on how to adjust and set new points ect any help would be greatly appreciated.Just want to say thanks to iboats great site
just went and looked real quick for some reason the coil was behind the mounting tabs and it looks like the mounting tabs were rubbing the fly wheel or something

is there a gap that the magnets need to be from the coil i know on small engines i.e. briggs and straton ect i use a buisness card

If you put the coil laminations flush with the machined edge where they mount, they will automatically be gapped correctly. Unless the armature plate is flopping around or the powerhead's main bearings are worn, allowing the crankshaft to flop back and forth.

If they are worn to where the fly wheel is flopping around (if they were that bad) then i should be able to feel play in the crankshaft right??
