I have a 1996 88 hp Evinrude, removed all bolts from lower unit. Cant remove lower unit because of linkage. Do we remove linkage from the top or the lower unit? How is this done?

Re: Trying to change the water pump

I recently rebuikt the water pump on my 1996 112 Johnson, very similar to yours. On the right hand side, facing the rear of the boat, under the carbs, you will see a pull-pin in the linkage attached to the rod going down into the LU.

After you pull this pin, you can slide the linkage to one side and disengage the shift rod that goes down to the LU. One word of caution, don't turn the rod after you remove the foot, keep it in the same position as it is now. Turning it will shorten or lenghten the rod and will affect shifting. Good luck.

To install, just reverse the procedure.

Do yourself a favor and get an OEM shop manual.
