I have a 1995 Johnson Ocean Runner, V4, 115HP
I've had her for 2 years, with no problems.
Cold start:
-Pump the bulb a few times.
-Turn the ignition and press to prime.
-Fires up as normal.
-Runs like a champ thru the entire range.

Warm re-starts in the past:
-Just a bump, and she fires right off.

New troubled warm re-start problem: (Duplicated on hose, or in water, whether right away or 15-30 minutes later, and you can smell gas, almost like a flooded state)
-Engine turns over a lot.
-Let off the key, and then turn over some more.
-After a few more times, sometimes opening the throttle in neutral, she eventually lights off, and runs fine the rest of the time.

A chink in the aromour of confidence for her. How can I get that confidence back?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Harry

don't push in on the key, that floods them warm motor. have you checked spark when it is warm.

I would eliminate the easy stuff. Get a spark tester from an auto parts store and check it for spark when this happens. There's also the quick start which adjusts the timing to ease the start. I've never messed with it, look around this board as I'm sure someone has.
Check out the fuel lines for cracks Any leak in the fuel system will cause problems.

Thanks guys!
I don't push the primer when warm, only when cold.
Spark/Ignition is kind of what I am thinking. I'll pick up a spark checker at lunch today, and try to check it this evening.
Thanks again, Harry

I have a '97 150HP Ocean Runner. Yesterday it would stall when I go into neutral and then be very hard starting with a strong smell of gas. It turned out to be that the shift linkage is holding the "Shifter switch" causing the Port bank to be dead. Is this a possibility for your engine?

Good luck

Re: 1995 Johson Ocean Runner Warm Re-Start Problems

Put her on the hose, and as normal cold start, fired right up with a little primeing. I let it warm up, shut it off, and it will not re-start. Start pulling each plug wire and putting it on the spark checker. Nada, they are all dead. I start looking at all the linkages where the timing is at, making sure they are moving and returning to where they are supposed to be, yep they are. Keep trying to get her started back up, no love. OK, first stop, lets look at the kill switch rope. I disconnect the little clip on the saftey line from covering the switch button. Start turning her over, and manually press the little button in with my other hand, fires right up. Push the button in and out a couple of times, put the clip back on, fires right up, let her warm up good again. Shut her off, fires right back up. Repeated this several times, and she seems to be fireing right back up with just a bump now. So, it seems the gremlin was the kill switch. Doesn't make a lot of sense, as to why it would fire up cold, and then not warm, because of a switch that's 8ft away. The only thing I can think of, is maybe that the resistance was fine when the motor was cold, but once warm the resistance from the kill switch was not what she wanted. I still have a feeling that something else may come about, but for now, she seems back to normal.
Thanks again for the help fellas, Harry

Glad to hear you found it. You could probably bypass it to confirm it's the switch. If it's a binnacle throttle, four screws and you're right there.
