Re: Roof pitch

All you need is a two foot level and a tape measure. Put a pencil line on the level one foot in from the edge, put the corner of the level on the roof and raise it till the bubble is in the middle (Level) hold it there and measure up from the roof to the mark on your level. that'll do it. Then you know how many inches of rise you have per foot.

Re: Roof pitch

Or a stand a framing square with long side on roof and short side pointing to sky (short square side downhill). Place level at 12 of long side and read where it intersects on short side.
For increased accuracy, place a good size board on the roof so you are not thrown off by humps in the shingles.
Also many older rafters sag, take this into account when placing square.
(I put the level at the end of the square(24") and then half the other end.
It's easier and more accurate)

Re: Roof pitch

Same concept, but do it from the attic, measuring the bottom of the roof decking.

1) Easier to get to (for my house, anyway). Since I'm not on the rooftop itself, also somewhat safer.
2) With no shingles, may be more accurate.

Re: Roof pitch

Simple formula. Roller skates, body weight, stopwatch
Weight divided by time equals X.:D
(sometimes I just can't help myself..:D:p;))

Re: Roof pitch

Less than 3/12, shingles aren't good.
If you are close to that, standing seam metal may still have problems, due to splashing up, to the seam.

Well, if these dang storms would ever move out, I might be able to tell something.
I'm sure it's more than 3/12 though, it's hard to walk upright when your on it.

If you can't walk on it, metal will work, and last a long time.

The easiest way to do it is to write the check when you get the bill and not worry about it.

Re: Roof pitch

I think there is a Pitch to Price ratio you can use to back figure it. Ya might try Googling it. :p:D:D
