Ive got a 1985 35hp Evinrude govt motor. I know some of the govt motors had a pump that was used to pump out the block if the engine had been submurged, but is there anything else that makes these engines differnt. The reason I ask is that this motor doesnt seem to have the power I would expect a 35hp engine to have. I have seen 25hp motor with two people in the boat outrun me in my boat. Did ole uncle sam put smaller reeds in these things to slow them down or something? Its on a 15' alluminum Jon boat and runs about 29mph (GPS) with me in the boat. Ive got one of those Bass Pro Shop jack plates on it in the attempt to get the engine at the correct hight. Is this thing restricted, or am I just asking for too much. There doesnt seem to be a whole lot of info on these engines on the net, had a hard time locating the model number to determine the year. Thanks in advance.

Re: Govt Motor

How far above the keel do you have the A/V plate set?

Re: Govt Motor

You will have to forgive me for I am not up on boating lingo. I dont feel as thought the it is over propped, in fact I plan on moving up pitch size as it seems to tach high, purely by sound. I currently running a 12 pitch and plan on going up to a 13 pitch stainless. As far as the A/V above the keel, not sure exactly what you are refering too. Ive got the motor height set up to where the the portion you would connect a whale tail to is flush with the bottom of the boat. I hope this is what your are refering too. Thanks for the help.

Re: Govt Motor

you need to trouble shoot your motor check and clen carbs check timeing /
run compression check ,and spark test ,there have been quite a few post on here for the government motors they are somewhat rare ,repost when you run comp check you shouldnt get outrun by a 25 if properly set up the government motors were quite reveloutionary in there time

Re: Govt Motor

Compression showed 135 in top cyliner, and 132 in bottom, acording to the guage I was using. I dont have a timing lite so unable to check timing for now. I did notice that on top of the carb where on of the hoses from the primer pump ran to was broke off, so I have to assume carb was sucking air in from there. I replaced that carb with one off of a parts motor I have that uses a choke instead of the primer. Started it up in the yard and seems to run fine. Ive got a stainless prop in the mail, and will change out plugs with new ones then give her a test run. Motor seemed to run fine before, just didnt seem to have the top end I would think a 35hp should have, compared to some 25hp Ive seen. I did notice one other thing, there is an indention on top of one of the pistions where I must have screwed in one of the atachments from my compression guage too far from a prior testing. The last time I had a compression guage on it was at least two years ago, so Ive been running with the indention in the piston for some time. Is it just a matter of time before pistons blows, or can I keep running it. Also planning on running a decarber through the motor because I can pretty much guarantee its never been done. Again thanks for the help.
