im in the process of purchasing a boat. its a 20' trophy with a 130 yamaha saltwater series v4. it has sat for atleast a year now. the boat and motor look to be in great shape. i checked plugs fuel etc before trying to start and after a basic checking i tried starting it and it fired up on the fourth atempt and purred like a kitten but i wasnt getting any water from pee whole so i shut it down right away. did i not wait long enough or is the pump probaly shot. the exit whole was clear but is there anything else to check before assuming its the pump? i dont mind replacing i just wanna check everything else before ripping it apart. im planning on replacing it and thermostats anyways biengs i have no clue when or if they ever been replaced. im not sure the year of boat yet but id say between 90-98. is there anywhere i can find boat and motor manufacture date. thanks for any help it will be greatly appriciated.
p.s what are your thoughts on the yamaha 130 engines?
thanks
andy

Re: water pump?

if you are in the USA - the last 2 numbers in the hull ID# are the year of the boat and if you post the engine model number we can tell you its year

Re: water pump?

ok on the motor itself i found a number 6N741 and on the motor lift i found a few numbers. 6L1, 130TXRT,UL703619, and Y hope this helps. also any info on the pump. im not getting any water coming out the pee whole. am i not letting it run long enough or should it start pumping right away. could the impeller be froze up from sitting?
Also ive been reading about damage from clogged carbs. what would be signs of them bieng clogged. it started and idled great but i only let it run for a few seconds due to no telltale. are clogged carbs something i should worry about or maybe im in the clear? i jus tgot this boat and dont wanna ruin anything from bieng inexperienced.

thanks
andy

Re: water pump?

that motor is new enough to have an alarm system-check it by pulling off the safety lanyard and crank the motor with key-alarm should go off if it's operating...if it were actually overheating you would hear a solid alarm-"BEEEEEEEP"...if not - then try some compressed air up the pee hole with the motor running to clear any blockage...anytime someone buys a used boat they should do a full service so that THEY know the maintenance history

Re: water pump?

I would replace the water pump along with the t stats as you don't know if or when they were last serviced.

Re: water pump?

When you get the pump rebuilding kit, be sure to also get the steel collar and plastic spacer that goes on top of the impeller. Does not come with the kit ???? Parts man should know what you are talking about. regards FRED

Re: water pump?

do a forum search, I have posted step by step bolt by bolt instructions on changing the pump on 95 and up V motors.
pay carefull attention to the part about installing the collar or you will be posting about a knock at idle speeds in gear.
