One of the tubes on the side of the thermostat housing has broken off. Has anyone had success at repairing with epoxy or other materials? It's the port side, if that makes any difference. A replacement is $185 so I would like to try before I buy.

I am a bit confused. I am assuming it is one of the pipes coming out of the housing where the rubber hoses hook to it? It if got broke trying to get a hose replaced I would jb weld it and let it go at that.

Yes it's the inlet or outlet from the port side cylinders. I haven't replaced that hose but I think water may have frozen in that line over the winter. I see a drain hole inside was obstructed with dirt. It looks like there's a crack on the bottom too. There were calcium deposits on the bottom so it appears water was seeping out there too. I'm going to try to epoxy it. I wonder if I can get a little strip of fiberglass cloth embedded in the JB Weld to give it some strength. I've got polyester and epoxy resins too for repairing the boat hull. Which do you think is better for adhering to plastic?

There must be tons of those housings around the country on junk motors. They were used on the V-4 motors for years. Try a free classified want ad on the Antique Outboard Motor Club's website www.aomci.org

If it broke because of freezing I would be a bit concerned about the internals. Like FR said there are a lot of those out there that can be had used.

I have it glued and it looks strong but I'm going to look for a replacement. I don't want to think about one side blowing off at WOT. The little tiny drain hole can get obstructed with the smallest of particles then the housing doesn't drain. I think the engine block drains despite this obstruction.
I do have a tell tale now thanks to iboats members. It works well. I wish I did it sooner.
